In my youth I read a series of SF juvenile fiction. The main character was an officer in some kind of Imperial Navy. Their ships bridges were open to space. You manned your position wearing an armored spacesuit. There was a race of intelligent bears which were a parody of Russians.

Anyone recall the books?

The only spaceship/bears/Russians series that pops to mind is Bill Baldwin's "Helmsman" series: link

That would be my guess, too.

Yep, that's the series.

Baldwin's Helmsman series is a great read.

Thanks guys. As usual the group comes through. I am going to try to find the first book and give it to a friend's son. He is in high school and seems to like SF.

You might want to skim the book and check with his parents as there is some sexual content in the books.
