Thanks, all.
People often ask me what is the minimum number of toys on the table for a Crucible game and I like to explore that on other people's behalf (and – if you're trying out new rule ideas – you don't need the table filled up with stuff!). This was a demonstrator of a smaller game, as opposed to the previous 7 detachment, 4 player frenzy.
Size wise, that game was on a 6ft by 4ft table with, as can be seen, a lot of 'line-of-sight-braking' scenery, as you need when a lot of the AFV weapons have (effectively) infinite range. But it could have been played on a 4ft by 4ft with a bit of a squeeze.
Because one of the Detachments was Trained, it had a lot of things on the table (15 including 6 infantry stands) and the Veterans had 10 including 3 infantry. Two Elite detachments (say Slammers versus Alaudae) would have been two detachments of 8 vehicles/infantry.
And of course the game works in sub detachment sizes of Troops (as per Supplement 4 PDF link ) though – with a Troop being only half the size of a detachment, that usually makes for a pretty quick game.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed it: I have to say I do like the way the system uses the rule for 'Chaos Mounting' – as the forces take casualties, they find it harder and harder to do complex manouvres and are generally reduced to hunkering down or desperate lone charges.
