The German Wehrmacht fielded an enormous number of self-propelled anti-aircraft guns during the war. You've got your Sdkfz 7s mounted with 37mm and 20mm flakvierlings, the Sdkfz 10 with a single 20, and the Sdkfz 9 with an 88mm. Then you have the various fully tracked SPAAs on the Pz 38(t), Pz IV and other chassis.

Regardless of their historical performance, which SPAA guns have you found to be the most effective in FoW?

Ostwind

I should have also asked, "… and why have they been so effective?"

effective at chasing aircraft, or effective at shooting up ground targets?

Shooting up ground targets, my preference is anything packing a flakvierling. Quad 20mm guns is nasty.

I was going to say mobelwagen -- but its pretty close with the ostwind. The 37mm AA is fantastic at shooting stuff down -- longer range, higher firepower. Plus anything with armour can be used to dig out infantry.

I like the Ostwind for the reasons above and the FA3 stops MG's from shooting you up
Next fav is the Triple 15mm 251's
They have same gun stats as Wibles, less armour and slightly less mobility but cost 15 points instead of 55 – when taken as part of a GPG plt

My Hungarian Nimrods work well.

High fire rate and sensible range for holding off aircraft and the ability to relocate reasonably quickly. Enough armour to give that step up in survivability over unarmoured trucks particularly around enemy infantry and MG armed recce items that penetrate the lines (though tanks and good ATGs and they are toast obviously).

Plus there is a good sting in the tail with the HUngarian AT round for the gun in early and mid war and a high rate of fire to make anything going for them a little nervous despite the small unit size.

Late war, its simply a good AAA unit with mobility and enough armour to provide some artillery protection. Face the enemy directly and expect to die.

Its not a world beating uber-tank – its however good at its AAA role, moderately survivable and mobile with good enough armament to be able to operate in a secondary combat role if pressed in early and Mid war. However its vulnerable enough that you don't automatically want to go looking for the secondary role.

So its a decent unit to include in an army and that's a bonus to have on top of the fact that it models what it was quite well.

I used to always opt for 3.7s, but with the V3 change to RoF while moving I now prefer the Quads. Either Armored Half Track or Wirblewinds. I find myself often engaging ground targets, specifically recon elements, with mine and the higher RoF lets me move and still rip'em up!

I hear you Dameon and I love my Wibbles – great looking model but if you really need to stop those Sturmies then 3.7mm is better
