Recent coverage of the Spanish Monarchy has revealed to me a hitherto unknown military millinery fact: the Spanish peaked cap has the appearance of being slightly too small. Here is the proof, Goldilocks style
Too Small!
Too Big!
Just Right! |

Perhaps their missiles are rather puny. |

The RAF always had a rather dashing uniform. |

In retrospect, I should have anticipated incongruous headwear from our Iberian Friends, having long been fascinated and repelled by that of the Guardia Civil.

Enfant P. is there another purpose for that hat? Does it double as an eating tray or something? That is one wacky hat. I'm digging the shades. |

It's the inherent evils of evolution. As we know (and we all should know this on TMP), the broad brimmed hat of the late 17C turned into the tricorne, which then began to flatten into the "cocked hat" until it became a proper bicorne. The bicorne was adopted as the headdress for the GC upon their formation, a popular choice amongst national police forces of the time such as the French Gendarmerie
and the Italian Carabinieri
These became smaller and more stylized as the years passed
until we're left with the thing the GC wear. |

There is a Spanish "military urban legend" that says that the shape of the Guardia Civil tricorne was designed to be ridiculous on purpose by the Corps' founder, the Duke of Ahumada. The idea was that the Guardia, shamed by his hat, would feel even more apart from the civil society that mocked him behind his back. |

Hey, now, North Korea needs big hats like that because they are SSSOOOOOOO much smarter than we are. Iran needs even bigger hats! |
