Wow! The rumors are true. Could this make WW1 mainstream? Exciting prospect.

Winston0108 Jun 2014 5:10 a.m. PST

Very interesting idea of marketing. Could really go a long way in making WWI mainstream.

VonTed08 Jun 2014 5:17 a.m. PST

Wow indeed. $100 USD for a starter box? Not bad….. I wonder who in battle front feel asleep and let that price stand? :)

panzerCDR08 Jun 2014 5:35 a.m. PST

Wow! Those look really neat . . . and shiney! I wonder if they will be out at Historicon? For my wallet's sake, I hope not.

Dave Crowell08 Jun 2014 5:42 a.m. PST

Looks nice so far. The armies shown even look reasonable, if tank heavy.

This will be one to watch.

Flames of the Great War!

bjporter08 Jun 2014 7:14 a.m. PST

The link doesn't seem to work for me. Is it down?

laager5008 Jun 2014 7:47 a.m. PST

Looks good, other projects will now have to go on hold.
Bet early war infantry won't be available until after the yanks have arrived.

mac95th08 Jun 2014 7:58 a.m. PST

Martian Front 15mm and now WW1 FOW 15mm. Lots of goodies that can me used for both.

nazrat08 Jun 2014 8:32 a.m. PST

Looks cool!

Steve W08 Jun 2014 8:39 a.m. PST

I like that their selling 2 A7V's in a box, means you can by 10% of the entire German tank production in one go

CraigH08 Jun 2014 12:49 p.m. PST

I wonder if the rules are 'stand-alone' or will require the purchase of the WW2 set.

Regardless, this does look interesting.

fox news tea party08 Jun 2014 1:00 p.m. PST

Wow! This could be ww1 set to get. Maybe.

VonTed08 Jun 2014 2:03 p.m. PST

I think the rules are coming in those magazine Wargames Illustrated?

CraigH08 Jun 2014 2:46 p.m. PST

@VonTed – that's what I read too – but, weren't the Vietnam and Middle East rules actually just a supplement for the FoW rules ? You needed the full rulebook for them to be useful.

Ahhh, but re-reading – it does say "full rules" in WI 322.

Dave Crowell08 Jun 2014 4:01 p.m. PST

The introductory rules from the "Open Fire" WW2 starter box set are available free online, and the full rulebook in mini size can be found quite cheaply, so even if these do require the WW2 rules you won't have to shell out for the hardcover rulebook if you don't want to.

monk2002uk08 Jun 2014 4:14 p.m. PST

The lists bear some relationship to WW1 but they are designed for FoW not for historical accuracy. For example, there are too many anti-tank rifles, far too many tanks, too many MMGs, no German spigot mortars but rifle grenadiers, too many Stokes mortars, etc, etc. The stormtroopers are described as 'an unstoppable force at close quarters', which misinterprets how the specialist stormtroopers achieved their success tactically. It should be noted that most infantry regiments had their own Stosstruppen units by this stage of the war and there were no specialist Stosstruppen (ie from units such as Sturmbataillon Rohr) for the attempt to take Villers Bretonneux.

These are not criticisms. FoW is designed to provide a particular gaming experience. The army lists in the PDF are fully consistent with this.

Any exposure WW1 gets is fantastic in my book. I'll support it for the miniatures and terrain, the rules are a wait and see, but if it catches on (even mildly), then its a good thing for everyone who's into the period.

I wonder how they will reproduce the role and effect of the incessant artillery?

brass108 Jun 2014 10:49 p.m. PST

Undoubtedly the same way they handle division-level and higher artillery in the WWII version. I look forward to the British 9.2" howitzer battery making its first on-table appearance.

I prefer the higher level game of Great War Spearhead for WW1, but still, be very interested to see the miniatures.

VonTed09 Jun 2014 5:04 a.m. PST

WHen is the release date for the minis?

Dave Crowell09 Jun 2014 12:51 p.m. PST

The rumour I heard said August release, but that is only rumour and speculation. Most probably based on the release date of the issue of Wargames Illustrated with the rules supplement.

VonTed09 Jun 2014 2:00 p.m. PST

If the minis are not ready when the rules come, I imagine that ALL the other 15mm WW1 mfg's will be happy as can be.

monk2002uk09 Jun 2014 3:20 p.m. PST

LVLAURN, I am with you on this FWIIW.
