Why would you want 4 small track units versus 2 large tracks on an Ogre-size tank? Is it for maneuverability or just looks? I ask because it's a lot easier as a modeler to find two long tracks versus 4 short tracks. From a 'real world' perspective, isn't it safer to have one large unit instead of the weak-ish linkage between two giant units? Gimme some advice, peanut gallery! |

More points of contact over rugged terrain? Stays level over rugged terrain? If one set breaks it wont go round in circles?

I always envisioned BOLOs as having multiple track units, like 8 to 12, because if you disable the track on one, the unit can still move. Speaking from experience, if a modern tank throws a track, that sucker isn't going anywhere for a while! |

Also ground pressure. Divide the weight of the tank by the area of treads in contact with the ground and you have its pressure rating. Too few/narrow tracks = higher point load on whatever it's traveling over = sink into ground. Unless I'm very much mistaken. |

Yeah but if lots of tracks have the same surface area as one big one than it makes no odds. Having more tracks that are smaller does not mean they will have more surface area.. |

No, but it's easier to drive them since the tracks themselves have less mass individually. |
