Just finished my first 28mm AWI unit. Some Perry plastic Continentals. They are cracking figures!

Betsy Ross flag alert!!!!!

Supercilius Maximus06 Jun 2014 6:37 a.m. PST

As it happens both of those flags were originally designed to be naval ensigns.

Thanks for the positive comments.

The flags: Not sure what I have done wrong here apart from the excessive number of them! In any case I like the look and that is enough for me!

Dr Josh,

The Betsy Ross flag – and the hokey story that goes with it – is a bit of a long-running joke on this forum (a bit like bricoles on the Napoleonic boards, but much better mannered). It's nothing to worry about – your figures, your rules.

(The Stars and Stripes was originally designed by the naval committee in Congress to allow Continental ships to be recognised on the high seas; it was actually never intended to be flown on land. The rattlesnake flag was first flown by the S Carolina State Navy.)

The back story is that the Betsy Ross myth is just that. A myth.
It was never used on land, and certainly not as a "national flag" for a regiment. Mel Gibson in "The Patriot" notwithstanding. One reason is that American regiments did not carry any national flag, but only regimental standards. Of course, some might have. grin

We "all" have Betsy Ross flags in our American units. Mine go back to 1984 or so. Now that I "know better", you will only pry them from the cold dead hands of the proud carriers with great difficulty.
I would not do it now, but neither will I change those who have it.
I have never "replaced" older units, except for selling some to a friend that were actually too small for me, if you can believe that. Hinchliffe with Betsy Ross flags still soldier on though, winning as often as not.

And the bottom line is that the regiment gets painted and flagged "as the Colonel shall decide", and you are the Colonel.

Ah ha – many thanks for the info gentlemen! I think this is a transgression I am likely to repeat ;)

Very nice – AWI my next project.
Are the plastics the same heft as the metals?
