There is never an excuse to execute civilians not envolved in combat.

Yet, there was a reason that Oradour was choosen for this treatment. The village was a center of resistance activity directed towards 2nd SS "Das Reich" on their march up from Southern France towards Normandy. There were 3 OSS agents operating with resistance forces from the village.

This event is covered very well in the book "Das Reich" by Max Hastings.

The SS officer in charge of this had just had his brother in law (another SS officer) killed in a resistance ambush near the village. 2nd SS had been under constant ambush for almost 2 weeks. The units hit by French resistance were usually communication, supply, medical and HQ units. The officer in charge was later killed fighting in Normandy.

After this massacre, resistance units were told to avoid attacks upon 2nd SS units.

Alas, the site requires registration.

What is the "new evidence" to which it refers?

I read that book. It was a pretty gruesome massacre. Did the book say that they may have had the wrong village? There was one with the same/similar name down the road.
