Relic Tarentine Cavalry 28mm link I started these awhile back and got them to game playable stage for a game last weekend at Kublacon 2014.
These are Relic 28mm with Foundry, A&A and Vendel horses substituted for the smallish horses included. I also used a few LBMS shield stickers, but over painted them. I dislike LBMS stickers since I break half of them-- I prefer my home grown decals. Most of the shields are hand painted.. I need to add some feathers to helmets and tighten up some sloppy areas to say these are finished. Some plastic Greek hoplites donated their crests to the project. An Old Glory Thracian fits in well, as does a Magister Militum figure. Anyway these are neat figures for Early Successor Tarentines and can mix with Aventine and Polemarch among others.
The commander is a very unique figure with a ornate pylos helmet, which is probably not your standard combat helmet-- but what the heck! |

Nicely done, liked the standard and the variety in the shield designs especially. Have a unit of these done and interested to see how they compare with Aventines product. Game playable stage indeed! Good idea about using spare plastic helmet crests, thanks. |

Good job! I didn't believe those are Relic because of the horses but you explained. Agree with you on LBMS stickers. |

Lovely! I wonder if the Relic horses are really out of scale, or if they just seem that way to us, since we are accustomed to bigger horses now than were generally available then. Doug |

Hi Doug, You've been following my work for a while, thanks. These Tarentine horsemen were a project that was started closer to when Relic was first started. I was finding my way in what proportions I was going to settle with. These were sculpted to match the 'Chunkier' ranges out there. So by adding them to the well proportioned horses of Ebob, the horses may appear even smaller than they were historically compared to their riders. Jeff was quick to tell me that on fist glance the horses appeared too small. Looking back on it, and comparing them to current work, it was the riders :) The minis have toned down quite a bit and I am happy to where I refined them although they are a !@#$% to cast sometimes, being of finer proportions. The stiffer alloy makes up for it!!! Jeff, you did a fabulous job, very trick!!! Thanks so much for the post and I hope my comment here isn't LOUD. I hope you all find it merely supportive. Best, Mike PS. Heres a look back on the Taretines

Very nice, JJ! The colours are lovely. I see you have used some Foundry horses alongside Mike's. Interesting re the LBMS. I applied over 200 in May, alone, and have a 0% failure rate with them. I'll drop you a line

I think my failure rate is mostly based on the transfers being brittle (because of our dry climate).. and my total ineptitude
Still I like them as guides
for over painting. My home grown are easier to use and I just need to print a new batch. |

More photos from our WAB games at Kublacon, focusing on the Tarentines
and the poor lighting at US Cons
Tarentines deploy against a Lysimachid force commanded by Brinton Williams.
Bad lighting.. fuzzy ..
A bit better
watching the Scythed Chariot do nothing much
but more than it should have..
Starting to figure out the lighting..
