Hi,

for our WotR project, I've been scratch building a medieval cog:

I know that the shape of the hull is too narrow for a medieval ship and I'm not sure if I should continue and make more of those or try a different approach…

Cheers,
Shandy

Zvezda makes plastic model kits of a Medieval Cog and a Medieval "life boat" in 1/72d scale.

Should work well enough with 15mm figures.

dBerczerk, I saw the lifeboat at a show once and almost bought it… wasn't completely sure about how it would fit. Should have bought it anyway :-)
Also, sawing off the bottom to make it a waterline model sounds like a job I really would mess up…
Thanks for the nice feedback!

Excellent job! It seems it's always the hull that presents the central problem with boats and ships. Thankfully some of us have great flea markets/swap meets to help overcome problems of that nature. For those less talented than you and/or lacking a great flea market/swap meet, Kobblestone Miniatures has just come out with their Medieval line of buildings and that line includes a beautiful cog for 28mm. Thanks for posting. Richard

It looks perfect. Build more as opportunity allows.

Thanks, after all the positive feedback, I'll certainly build more!
It's a shame that many of the nice ship models are made for 28mm… I'd really like to get a manufacturer to make 15mm medieval ships… and a crew!

The fore and stern castles make the hull look rounder.

A company called Down-East Crafts used to make a line of wooden ship models in the same style as the one you started from. I thought I'd see if they made a cog, or perhaps models of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, or even the Golden Hind, which would have had rounder hulls. Unfortunately, I can't find a website for them. I think the price for them new was about $5.00 USD each.

That is a very nice conversion.

As an aside to a beautiful scratchbuild, I have the Zvezda medieval cog and although it is advertised at 1/72 scale it really matches better with 28mm figures in my opinion.

Here is the Zvezda boat next to a LOTR dwarf figure.
