I have finished the Bar and General store for my shanty town colony. Only thing left to do is put the names on them. There are more pics on my blog: stealthychinwag.blogspot.co.uk

Very nice and they go well together :D What did you use for the fencing? |

Your a terrain master Stealth, really great looking stuff. |

Thanks guys. :-) The fencing was car body with raw plugs. The ones I used are a bit to big. Should have used smaller ones. But they do have that dragged of a starship look to them I hope. |

Very nice! What did you use for the base board? Enquiring minds got to know. |
Stealth1000 | 28 May 2014 5:34 a.m. PST |
Twoball Cane it was just standard 3mm MDF. The stuff can warp I have found unless you put it on some kind of stand so the bottom can dry off. |

So those are cast resin buildings from GZG? Can you tell me the approximate dimensions? I'd like to try to make some similar buildings from either styrene sheet or possibly hobby woods, like basswood, balsa and thin plywood. I'm hoping to make a couple of small groups of shacks, hovels and the like. If I get good at it, I may even try a small fishing village. By the way, both boards are absolutely lovely. Very nice (and inspiring) work. |

The buildings are multipart metal. GZG doesn't do resin any more. G. |

Thanks guys :-). The store and bar are 2 inch by 3inch long and wide. As has been said they are cast metal. They glue tighter ok. But I reinforce them with a load of no more nails inside. I really like GZG stuff. I want to get my hands on some Brigade 15mm building next. I have been inspired by all the infinity terrain. Now they have some truly fantastic infinity layouts. At some point I will building a little city. |

You still have no dogs running around here. HO scale RR dogs would work perfect here. Preiser figures scale out quite well with 15mm. I posted a few pics ob the fb page a few days ago. |

Stealth1000 replied: The store and bar are 2 inch by 3inch long and wide. So, would that be about an inch tall then? Thanks for the info, I hope to start gluing up some little wooden shanties soon, since I'm just getting over pneumonia, and will have to wait awhile before I can sand resin, spray rattle can primer, or work with any of the more heavy duty adhesives. Cheers. |

So, aside from the bar and the general store, what other buildings do you have planned for your shanty town? Or were you looking to keep it all nice and small? Dan |

@Stealth1000: Sorry, in the flurry of well-deserved compliments, I think my question got lost. Can you tell me how tall those buildings are? |
Etranger | 30 May 2014 4:40 a.m. PST |
They'd be a bit more than an inch high. The container (the small building in the top 2 photos) is 70mm by 28mm by (about) 28mm according to the GZG site. link I must finish mine off! |
Stealth1000 | 30 May 2014 6:42 a.m. PST |
Sorry grommet37 yer they are an 28mm high for the big buildings as 25mm for the smaller ones. Dan next thing I am working on is a pumping station and the original settlement building that made up the colony from Critical mass. Once all the low tech colony stuff is done its the big project. A couple of hi-tech city blocks. I am planning a desert world too later. |

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the replies and the linkage. Anyone know if they make styrene sheets with that corrugated metal kind of texture (corduroy cross-section) in a scale suitable for 15mm? That looks like it might be fun to work with. Or maybe some kind of granny grating might do the trick. I might originally try to whip up some "plywood lean-tos" or "scrap lumber shanties" for my settlements of Shackham and Hovellford. I'll look into getting some suitable hobby wood or styrene sheets for inch-high shelters. Cheers. |

I plan to add some tarps too! TMP link Dan |

Grommet – you're in the states? Try Evergreen evergreenscalemodels.com There are other brands too eg Plastikard in the UK, but Evergreen has the biggest range IMHO. They're widely available elsewhere in the world too. |
grommet37 | 02 Jun 2014 10:26 a.m. PST |
Dan, Good link. Hadn't seen that. I think I'll be asking friends who smoke to save the foil, or trying tiny bits of silk as tarps. What did you think of my idea of using bamboo sushi rollers for arcades and awnings? Any good? Etranger, Yes, I'm in the US. That's a great tip about the Evergreen plastic. I have a hobby shop just a couple blocks from the house (RC store, but they may stock styrene). I wonder which size corrugated sheet would be appropriate for 15mm? Stealth1000, If you don't mind me asking, could you tell me the approximate "pitch" to the ribs on the "corrugated" bits? How many raised ribs per inch or cm? Is it around 10 ribs per inch? I'm thinking of trying to make some "tin shacks" from styrene sheets, and I'm not really sure about scale. Thanks for any help you can offer. MrHarold, That pic is very cool, thanks for posting that. It gives me a real sense of what can be done in a small area. You say that is only two feet by two feet? That's a lot of small terrain in a nice, playable space. |

Grommet37, For an idea of which corrugated styrene is compatible, check out the third photo here: link And keep in mind that each square on the mat represents 1 square cm (I hope). If your shacks turn out nice, try your hand on some of these afterwards: TMP link Dan |
grommet37 | 02 Jun 2014 7:28 p.m. PST |
Dan, Thanks, excellent suggestion. I'm counting about 4 ribs per centimeter (I got 18 in 4.5 for that long face in the lower right of the first photo of the DH blog post, and any visual check seems to confirm it). I really like those buildings in the TMP link'd thread, they fit in well with my ideas for Ice Station Romeo. Since I'm already using some Shapeways structures in WS&F, I figured white styrene with a similar Clear Blue/Magic Wash would fit in nicely. The kind of "container" quarters and modular facilities one might expect to find at a polar outpost. |
