Looking forward to all these immensely! Quite how I justify yet another unit of Gendarmes, of what was probably the smallest French contingent at Waterloo, I will not worry about….the two eagles are hard to explain! |
jammy four | 22 Jan 2015 3:54 a.m. PST |
thanks Deadhead…………. at least you will have a choice of command and with two eagles the unit can feature as "Early Gendarmes" or later in the Classical helmet …though the unit was split into two half taking Prussian prisoners back to France and as far a we can tell the Classically inspired helmets and Bearskins were worn in conjunction with each other in the Waterloo campaign…….its the ratio we are unsure of! regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com |

I must again say how much I am looking forward to all these. I am waiting to put in a decent sized order because I know the challenge when I try to import these. From outside the EU the postal service will hold them back as not duty paid. OK, I then go to the collection office and pay the duty plus an £8.00 GBP handling charge to the Post Office………..daft but there it is. Well worth it if a sizable order. (Full range of Mamelukes/Engineers/Marins/Gendarmes and Murat!) If only there was a UK agent/stockist…….. |
jammy four | 26 Mar 2015 4:39 p.m. PST |
Deadhead….I am the UK stockist!!agent/manufacturer.owner!! having sent these round the world from Argentina to Sweden once registered there's never a problem! en avant! regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com |
deadhead | 27 Mar 2015 2:34 a.m. PST |
Then I am being dim. Apologies. Every pair of US origin desert boots I order gets stopped, with duty to pay, plus handing charge, and a major delay. At £150.00 GBP a time for the boots, I can live with the slight extra, though. My Eureka figures from Oz proved significantly more expensive as a result though (well worth it!) There will be import duty to pay on the figures……VAT gets added to anything I buy inside the UK. If it is added to the bill I just pay it and moan, as does everyone when taxed, but I have my purchase. Do you then post around the world, with the duty paid by you and added to the invoice? If so, brilliant, as it will get past the UK HM Revenue and Customs and not languish in a sorting office! Confess I did not know that could be done. I thought some trader needed to import them. en masse, pay the duty and flog them with that cost added. |

Ged, I'm coming over to the UK for Salute and will make a point of visiting your stand to see the new figures. Hopefully my good friend Mike Robinson will join me, so we'll be able to talk Waterloo (Quatre Bras) once again. Kind regards John |
jammy four | 27 Mar 2015 7:36 a.m. PST |
John that's good news …….looking forward to seeing your New Books on the conflict and Mr Robinson whose book on QuatreBras I really enjoyed. you will enjoy seeing the Gendarme de Elite and Mamelukes im sure. There will be a game near me run by my friends from Crisis in Belgium featuring the taking of the bridge at Charleoi by the Engineers and Marines of the Guard using my 28mm figures…this will be tremendous! best regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com |
John Franklin | 27 Mar 2015 8:39 a.m. PST |
Ged, I'll make sure that I bring some copies of all three books with me. I should have early copies of the third volume, which isn't scheduled to be released until June, by the end of April, so you'll be among the first to own this. I saw the marins and sapeurs of the Garde Imperiale in one of your posts and they look fantastic. I'll introduce you to Mike. I hope that you have a great show. Kind regards John P.S. The book on Ligny has a colourised version of the storming of the bridge at Charleroi. |

Why do we do it? I still have the second Napoleon carriage to do, using Westfalia landau parts, plus Perry dismounted Chasseurs a Chev as escort. The most difficult bit is done (the hood) Now, I am assured, the post will send me even more of these Gendarmes d'Elite and also those wonderful Mamelukes. I already have more (Perry) Gendarmes than Cuirassiers ( as someone memorably said, a bit like the close of play at Waterloo then!) and now my Mameluke band will outnumber my British infantry……… They do just sit on a shelf of course……and I used my wife's Paypal account……. But they are wonderful……. Then there is the bridge at Charleroi and the Marins and Genie figures……..end of the year! |

Oh wow. Just landed on my desk at work. My secretary knew they were coming and brought them in, in the middle of a clinic (don't tell hospital management!) They are even better than the photos suggest. Not a mould line to see, let alone any flash to remove. The crispness of the casting of the Mamelukes is almost intimidating! Can I do thesejustice? The anatomical proportions are better than I had thought. I had thought some images made some of them look too large in the head, for their trunk and legs. Instead, perfect. The separate right arm on some is a Godsend too. Great scope for variety. I have never seen an eagle so well done. Glad I ordered two for the Gendarmes. One is for minor conversion (or else I will have four eagles for one squadron of Guard Cavalry) Get this Malmaison carriage done, then to work here! |
jammy four | 03 Sep 2015 1:36 p.m. PST |
Deadhead appreciate all the kind comments as I know you are something of an expert on decently made castings ! makes all the quality control checks worthwhile…….I may have to do some more Napoleonics very soon! best regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com |
deadhead | 04 Sep 2015 8:23 a.m. PST |
An expert? Profound ignorance of any topic has never stopped me speaking with great authority on it. Talking in front of 250 colleagues at the Royal Society of Medicine, you need a Powerpoint show, lots of gags and word perfect preparation to talk "completely off the cuff". No, but I can recognise talent when I see it. I cannot understand how you can do the undercuts, so the Mamleukes' holstered pistols are not just blocks onto their chests. How can the Gendarmes' stirrups be so fine and seem separate from the dorsum of the foot? Great research. The Mamelukes' scabbards are reversed. The Gend officers have the cross on their chests. The helmets have chin straps secured with a boss that has every groove reproduced Niels Rullkoeter from Westfalia says it is "easy enough, when you know how"…….. A question. The Gendarme troopers all have a very carefully sculpted ridge running along the cross belt over the left shoulder. It reminds me of the canteen strap on an "English" infantryman. What is it for? I wondered if it was to help with the white edging to buff belts, especially if two overlapping belts, but it does seem quite right for that. I am almost tempted to remove it, (not difficult!) but will I then regret that? |
jammy four | 05 Sep 2015 1:18 a.m. PST |
Deadhead The Gendarmes de Elite belting is fairly complex due to the outer ridge of cow leather which added strength as their was a solid brass buckle at the end to hold the carbine and was white the remainder a deep buff colour.i think regret will be the first emotion you will experience! lol these belts generally were expected to last for twenty years not only in the Guard but for all line regiments. best regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com |
deadhead | 05 Sep 2015 7:20 a.m. PST |
Got it. You are portraying the double belt. One holding the musket/carbine and one the ammo pouch, the giberne. I've tended to think of the one underneath only appearing under the right armpit as, to be honest, that is how Perrys have always shown it. So I went to everything I could find on the arrangement and a button on the left upper chest to hold them together but, indeed, throughout, the outer does not completely overlap the inner. Oh dear. Now I have to paint two belts buff, with white edges….at least three ultra-thin white lines! Why do we do it? |
jammy four | 05 Sep 2015 1:26 p.m. PST |
its the Surgeon in you Deadwood looking for the best incision old chap!! ,,,on some plates you see only one belt but when the Gendarmes turn in the saddle the underbelt appears..all very technical……….attention to the finer details is satisfying!! en avant !! regards Ged gringo40s.com |
