Greetings ye, all sages and savants, Does anyone have a suggestion for 28mm miniatures for use as the French Metropolitan police? I've been bitten by the IHMN bug at last. Regards, Keith F. |

I'm not 100% sure what the uniform was in the 1890s, but if you want Gendarmes, Brigade Games has them: link |

Here is something. Looks like you could use FPW troops in short coats, maybe Franc Tireurs or Chasseurs? link |

Les officiers, peut etre? |

You need miniatures with a distinctive pre-WW1 look, and French képis.
I asked myself the same question. I would probably use miniatures of FPW, colonial, early WW1, French Army officers; that's the nearest I can think of. |

link That is the pack, which fits
. I wanted them for würthemberger Military police 1870 and than i found out they are perfect for the french! Greetings PS you want to shorten the barrel of the revolver a little so it does not look so US colt like. |

High boots are not a French thing

I don't know if you could make a full unit out of these to fit with IHMN rules (not read them) if you picked out possible ones similar to the pics. link from Brigade Models UK Patrice also points out the thigh boots. Would a file and a gentle bit of knife work solve this? |

Gents, thank you all for your guidance. Jeff – great find. I'm going to order a set, even though they look a little late, they're nice minis. Nick & Patrice – FPW was one of my first thoughts, but those tend to have banderole greatcoats and sashes, which bothers me, especially in light of Patrice's exquisite photos (of which, the first, I love) Sont bottes hautes un mode française? Cela dépend de la dame, non? ;) Rudi – those are pretty good. I would see about fixing the boots, as DLI suggests. DLI – not a unit, but a chief inspector, peut-etre? I think a bit of work on the trousers would be possible. Thanks all and well done. Keith |

I think that any kind of victorian bobbies with a french kepi head is the answer to your needs . |

You may want to have a look at the officer on the ACW Zouave sprue from the Perrys. That's pretty close to the first picture Patrice posted (although single breasted). Could certainly be converted quite easily: perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_63&products_id=2570&osCsid=em32ghf2ialk19iljvoc0inrg3 Only £1.00 GBP and you get a Zouave with it! Their Confederate Command sprue has a similar but double breasted officer, though he has a holster and a sword strap you might need to carve off. The kepis aren't quite right either, but are reasonably close for conversion work. |

Lou and mrinku – thanks for the tip and pointers. I may well order the zouave officer for a sergeant-constable. The Virtual Armchair General has some 1860's era police which I think match Patrice's photo nicely:
I'm also keeping an eye out for some inexpensive Empire of the Dead bobbies, as they have the short cape which I associate with the Gendarmes Nationale. Best regards, Keith F. |
