"BBC's 1982 adaptation of PC Wren's classic Foreign Legion tale. Fantastic acting performances , but low-budget battle scenes. It's about time a new version of this was made.studio scenes filmed in london, desert scenes filmed on a beach in Dorset, can you guess which one? Benedict Taylor
. Michael 'Beau' Geste Anthony Calf
. Digby Geste Jonathon Morris
. John Geste Great performance from john foreham as the book's villain, Lejuane. The 1960's and 1930's Hollywood versions of this story deviate so much from the original book that they are dreadful, in those versions, the soldiers don't even sing le boudin, a central part of the book's story! The awful hollywood versions even get Lejuane's name wrong! This BBC version is the most accurate representation of the book, despite its low budget." YouTube link Do you remember? 'Tiens! Voila du Boudin! Pour les Belges y'on a plus! Pour les Belges y'on a plus!' Not the best marching song in the world, but those boys sure can drink and march! Top tip – don't go for a run ashore with Legionnaires if you're duty the next day – Not in Dijibooti anyway – it'll take you a year to regain your rank! |

The 1930's Hollywood version was dreadful? Certainly one of my favorite movies of all time! Seeing the movie "Beau Geste" as a kid then got me to read the book by Percival Wren, which left me rather disappointed -- no Sergeant Markoff! I guess it's largely a matter of perspective. |

The 1939 version is one of my all-time favorite movies as well. Can't agree with you at all Armand. To each his own. |

I don't think enjoyed is the operative word for some of us. |
