Major laces. Takes forever to get on and off. That's why everyone who wears them is so angry and intolerant. Apparently.

PiersBrand16 May 2014 8:49 a.m. PST

Good to see the initial post edited.

So……among items guaranteed to start a flame war now are: GW, Napleonics, FOW (minor..) And now Tango

John the OFM16 May 2014 8:53 a.m. PST

"I agree with the OFM" was good for an hour on the DH , as I recall.
Many people served the time and didn't even realize it.

I also recall that I was the one who proposed the poll. That was back when it was fun and before things got out of hand.

Dervel Fezian16 May 2014 8:57 a.m. PST

Personally I do not use the stifle option

And, I am not trying to end the fun of a good old fashion slop around in the mud session, but it just seems to me that the simple solution of not showing the start of a stifle E's thread to the stifler would elegantly solve this issue?

No harm, no foul?

This one again ?

Goody!

Let's do the Math!

521 TMPers have stifled Tango01

TMP has 37,577 members.

1.4% of TMPers have stifled Tango01.

Ok – not everyone is active.

There are 10000 visitors to TMP per day. Of these only 3,000 are signed up members. Only 5.2% of all visitors have stifled Tango01.

Potentially 17% of TMP members who visit on any given day have stifled Tango01. This would be assuming that all the stiflers still visit on every day – which is clearly highly unlikely as on any one day only 1 in 12 of TMP members visit. If we lower that 19% down by a factor of 12 then 1.4% of TMPers who visit TMP on any given day have stifled Tango01.

Any way you cut it – only a very small percentage of TMPers or TMP visitors have stifled Tango01.

Incidentally – Page Hits dipped while Tango01 was Dawghoused – they've climbed to recent typical levels since his release. Coincidence? I doubt it. Those threads get a lot of hits – and that's a lot of TMP traffic.

If you have stifled him, you see nothing.

Problem solved.

+1 20th Maine.

How many of the hits are Tango himself?

MajorB16 May 2014 9:21 a.m. PST

If you have stifled him, you see nothing.

Problem solved.

Unfortunately, you still see the threads initiated by the person you have stifled on the Home Page and in the individual boards. On the individual boards you don't see who the thread initiator is, so you don't know it's from someone you have stifled until you click on it.

Rebelyell200616 May 2014 9:29 a.m. PST

On the individual boards you don't see who the thread initiator is, so you don't know it's from someone you have stifled until you click on it.

Do his blank threads give you cancer or computer viruses or something? A thread that looks interesting, but it turns out that the OP is a stifled person so you wasted an entire click and unnecessarily raised your blood pressure? Fetch me my fainting couch!

Why do I read a topic?
The subject interests me.
The boards it is on are subjects that interest me.

Why do I not read a topic?
The subject does not interest me.
The boards it is on are subjects that do not interest me.

What's missing here?
Who posted the topic. That is irrelevant.

Bashytubits16 May 2014 9:52 a.m. PST

And my stifle count has risen by two in the last hour, presumably for saying that the guy should be left alone until the editor decides otherwise. Sheesh. The anti-Tango crowd seem to have issues with those who don't agree with them; I guess they also burn a lot of books when they aren't fighting for TMP's soul.

Rrobbyrobot16 May 2014 10:19 a.m. PST

I like the way 20thmaine has put it. Heck, yall complainers aint even a significant minority. Just loud and spiteful.

MajorB16 May 2014 10:29 a.m. PST

Do his blank threads give you cancer or computer viruses or something? A thread that looks interesting, but it turns out that the OP is a stifled person so you wasted an entire click and unnecessarily raised your blood pressure? Fetch me my fainting couch!

That is not the point that some people are complaining about. I included it as part of the explanation of how stifles work. The problem that they see is the way that prolific posts push interesting stuff off the Home Page before some people (who don't actually come here every day) get to see it.

Silurian16 May 2014 10:38 a.m. PST

Some of the comments, for and against, are very disappointing. One faction or another are 'hateful', or 'spiteful'? Really? Maybe one or two. Not worth commenting on, or generalizing. We're all intelligent wargamers here.

Anyway, here's a direct question to those who know about such things, maybe even the Editor.
How much effort would actually be required to put in place this hypothetical "super-stifle" function on a site like this? A days work? A week? Completely impractical?

kidbananas16 May 2014 10:39 a.m. PST

he has basically said that he has no intention of changing his behavior!

Why should he? None of you have.

COL Scott ret16 May 2014 10:48 a.m. PST

I always find this to be a silly discussion, other than the fact that some people seem able to be both whinners and bullies at the same time.

I regularly wish to see post that go farther back, especially over weekends when I am busy I want to be able to look back far enough to see what interesting things are posted by the mass intelligence of TMP. However that said I find that I quite often look at Tangos posts, not because it is him but the subject is ineresting.

MajorB16 May 2014 10:53 a.m. PST

he has basically said that he has no intention of changing his behavior!

True, but then no-one else has caused Bill to lose revenue as a result of their behaviour.

GonerGonerGoner16 May 2014 11:05 a.m. PST

What would be interesting is if a second (or third ) member adopted a similar link bombing posting strategy plus the no content follow up to amplify the post count.

John the OFM16 May 2014 11:23 a.m. PST

Maybe all the bitching and whining about Tango is also causing Dear Editor to lose revenue too. It cuts both ways you know.
Don't imagine for a minute that your "side" is the only one behaving in an exemplary fashion.

Advertising revenue will be linked to hits per day, hits seem to go up when Tango01 is active.

Stealth100016 May 2014 11:36 a.m. PST

It just would not be the same without Tango. People like to have someone to throw rotten tomatoes at and it seems Tango has what it takes. It all just shows what short fuses a lot of people have. Its all pretty funny really IMO.

JohnnyPainter16 May 2014 11:40 a.m. PST

"True, but then no-one else has caused Bill to lose revenue as a result of their behaviour."

That is not entirely true.

kallman16 May 2014 11:52 a.m. PST

Agreed. Some have ceased to be Supporting Members for other reasons, but a fair number (enough to apparently make Bill feel uneasy) have ceased for reasons related to this issue.

If advertising revenue is linked to hits per day, then the bitching and whining may actually increase his revenue!!

I haven't stifled Tango or anybody on the TMP. If I don't want to read their posts, then I don't click on the post. It's easy.

MajorB16 May 2014 12:52 p.m. PST

You are missing the point. Yes, it is easy to scroll past his posts, but the Home Page has a limited size which means that his posts push others off the page so no matter how far you scroll you will never see them.

basileus6616 May 2014 12:59 p.m. PST

Tango is not breaking the rules, therefore this "ban Tango thread" is not only unjustified but also pointless.

Disco Joe16 May 2014 1:11 p.m. PST

How about if the editor could set it up that if you stifle him you do not see his posts on the front page and if you don't have him stifled you do. That is if it could be done. A win win for everyone involved.

Night Owl II16 May 2014 1:41 p.m. PST

From a sociology perspective this is fascinating.

From a miniatures hobbyist perspective this is disgusting.

An idea: Let's all go paint something this weekend.

Abwehrschlacht16 May 2014 1:56 p.m. PST

Someone posts something on a publicly accessible forum, grown men throw their dollies out of the pram.

Everything is normal at TMP, I see.

BelgianRay16 May 2014 2:01 p.m. PST

To the anti-Tango people : one thing is very clear to me : minorities are allways the noisiest and te first to verbalize in a non-tolarizing fation. This is even a major global problem, very well reproduced microscopically right here.

GarrisonMiniatures16 May 2014 2:09 p.m. PST

Yes, some posts are annoying, for example when someone has already posted the same topic and Tango hasn't bothered to check. I see that, I will comment on it.

But he also posts some useful stuff, and I probably read a higher proportion of his posts than I do of most other people.

So my comment is: keep posting, just try to temper the posts with a bit of research on what's already there. Also, you don't need to completely plaster the front page with several threads on basically the same topic, for instance by detailing several different figures by one manufacturer on different boards.

Ethanjt2116 May 2014 2:10 p.m. PST

I just know I'm going to get a stifle for this. oh well.

BOTH sides of this argument have their bullies. BOTH sides are being unreasonable. You all need to stop acting like children and get over yourselves.

Tango has NOT broken the rules (other than copyright) with his posting. He technically can continue on this road as long as those rules DONT change. It isnt difficult to scroll past his posts.

HOWEVER

On ANY OTHER forum this would be considered SPAM. Any reasonable person would at least try to be empathetic and implement a few restraints if their actions bother the community that much. How hard would it be for Tango to do a digest post?

Both sides of this stupid argument cant see reason.

Is it so hard to scroll past posts? No.
Would it be too much to ask for Tango to moderate his behavior? No.

You're both WRONG.

The easiest way to end this would be a super stifle. That way everyone who is bothered by this can be free from seeing his posts and the pro tango crowd can stop being rabid bullies who attack anyone who disagrees with his posting habits.

Bill, just make the damn super stifle, seriously. I am tired of reading this Bleeped text.

walkabout16 May 2014 2:21 p.m. PST

I agree with Ethanjt21. Bill, just make a super stifle and this will end.

MajorB16 May 2014 2:21 p.m. PST

therefore this "ban Tango thread" is not only unjustified but also pointless.

This thread is not asking for him to be banned.

Intrepide16 May 2014 2:28 p.m. PST

A dear friend of mine once told me about a game, "If you are not having fun you are doing it wrong." She is so right.

Brian Smaller16 May 2014 2:39 p.m. PST

I have been stifled 140 times. What is your point?

I do not think that I have ever said anything inflammatory or so on, yet at least 140 members have decided that anything I post is too foul to be seen by their eyes. Their loss, not mine – You see, I don't generally worry about what people I know think of me, let alone anonymous pseudonyms on the internet.

MajorB16 May 2014 2:49 p.m. PST

If this was an issue materially hurting the site Management would've squashed it already.

Several people have said that they have not renewed Supporting Membership because of it.

altfritz16 May 2014 2:58 p.m. PST

I will never stifle anybody, but I want the spamming to stop.

I have looked at Tango's posts and sometimes they have been useful, but I still want the spamming to stop.

He has posted links to pictures of my products on occasion and I appreciate that even though he sometimes puts it on the wrong board or describes it wrong. I still want the spamming to stop.

One thing that I do agree with you on is that Bill has to do something. He must make a definitive ruling – either limiting users to a number of thread starts per day or officially saying that it is business as usual or something.

Only Warlock16 May 2014 3:36 p.m. PST

Does Bill have to "Make a Ruling" every 6 weeks when the same old people start this up again? How many times do we need to go through this circular firing squad?

Mparx66616 May 2014 3:50 p.m. PST

Should policy be set because of a little group of loud screamers or reviewed and dealt with when said group is approaching the 50% of membership mark? Seems like a small group has a lot of work to do before this is that important. I on the other hand will try to enjoy as many posts from as many members of this site as possible. Go paint something or move a stand of your favorite minies and just smile and relax. You will be better off for it……..

Mark

Does Bill have to "Make a Ruling" every 6 weeks when the same old people start this up again?

Yes, because sooner or later he will make a favorable ruling. Or he'll turn the car around and go home because Ivan DBA won't stop touching Tango.
