A possibly summer project I may take on:

A scifi mini's game taking some of the best parts of games like Rogue Trader and Laserburn and putting it in a more modern design with a Necromunda style campaign feel.

Lots of strange characters, units, aliens and robots.
Random tables for generating quick characters.
Campaign rules (experience, loot)
Lots of crazy strange weapons and items.
Skills to build characters from.
Maybe even some pseudo RPG elements.
Pretty simple, quick rules without referring to charts or tables constantly.

Be able to grab random figures off the shelf, or roll up a warband and get modelling and painting.

In theme, think anime like Trigun or Desert Punk or video games like Borderlands. Less space marines in polished armour and more wasteland psychos, space pirates with purple hair and outcasts from all over known space.

The aim would be a fairly simple PDF release and not tied into any specific line of mini's.
Possibly crowd funded.

Is this something you'd be interested in?
What would it take to tempt you in?

please note, I am not looking for your recommendations on game rules.. I have a book shelf full of the blighters :)

Sounds interesting. Certainly Laserburn remains popular.

yesss…. lots of equipment please.

I also enjoy looking through different weapons and equipment. To be honest, it doesn't even all have to be that different, just a little different.

And a chance to be "good-guys" or at least law keepers/military in addition to outlaw gangs or just straight civilian gangs.

Weasel15 May 2014 12:08 p.m. PST

Yeah, the idea would be to have a fairly simple main game, and then loads of different guns, suits and gadgets.
There'll be a "random gun generator" too for loot for the main characters.

I'm sure lawmen and bounty hunters will make an appearance as well.

Mutants And Death Ray Guns from Ganesha sounds very similar

Similar in concepts yeah. This will be more "space pirates" and less post apocalypse.

A typical fight might be 2-3 characters and a squad or two on each side. Maybe a barely functioning battle robot and that weird alien mercenary.

The problem with MDRG is that the difference between a +1 bonus and a +2 bonus is very coarse and the small amount of stats means you quickly max out your units on progression.

I enjoy MDRG but it is designed for short campaigns.

Weasel15 May 2014 6:12 p.m. PST

So a slower / lower curve?

Alternatively, just have the guys dying fairly frequently so you cycle in new characters a lot :)

There are an awful lot of very good rule sets out there so a space pirate theme is a good idea. Rogue trader is a good starting point as most of the current games have bits from it.some of these are worth a look on the great free wargames site link
Check out wastelands, stalker, combatzone,Nuclear reanissance and as mentioned mutants and death ray guns.

I have been working on a project like you mentioned. So far I have a working weapon sheet and the stats for all the Red Dwarf races mentioned in the Red Dwarf RPG. I thought it would be interesting to port it to Rogue Trader. It's very much a work in process.

Bring it on. Visceral combat please. Down/Pinned/Wounded/Dead, etc.

I would buy a few copies and distribute them!!!…
Yes, very interested. No card driven mechanics, d6s only, and I'm sold. In fact, sounds like a version of "necrotrader/roguehammer" that I was considering before I decided to boycott GW miniatures entirely. Do it, do it now!

Weasel20 May 2014 12:45 p.m. PST

I like D6's and while I dig cards, I've kind of drifted away from them :)

I need to finish my WW2 project first, but this is a definite project for the summer.

Also NecroTrader is a damn good name :)

As a quick update, note taking has started for this. Stay tuned…
