I often find a rules set and stickwith/modify it til it bears little resemblance to the original rather than learn a new one
Then again I prefer scenarios to "tournaments" any day of the week, and SWXW looks to be JUST as susceptible to THAT phenomenon.
Seriously, a "meeting engagement" of equal forces has NOTHING on asymmetrical engagements with victory conditions.
Which briefing sounds better?
"Team A and Team B, you are
uh
both on the attack, neither of you has a significant advantage over the other, and nothing that happens here matters. In 45 minutes the "winner" will get to take his units against another opponent chosen by this chart I have right here. The 'winner' gets a gift certificate."
or
"Team A, you are a small unit of elite fighters. You are heavily out numbered. Your mission in this order is: Hold this position as long as possible and buy time for the non-combatants to leave, Inflict maximum casualties on anything fast enough to pursue them, and get out as intact as is possible. All we need to do is evacuate, every life we save here buys us time to win the war tomorrow. Remember that two (or more) cripples is better than one kill!
Team B, you are a larger force of regulars. Your mission is to crush the logistical/command and control assets that are trying to flee. These are the best and brightest of the enemy and must be destroyed at all costs. This is our one chance to get them all and sweep them up before they can scatter like roaches. Capture, Destroy, or Cripple as many enemy assets as possible. Every One that you kill today saves COUNTLESS lives later, so while don't spend your forces poorly, inflicting damage is by FAR the most important consideration."
The great thing about most scenarios is that they can be customized easily. Take the above one
It doesn't matter if it's the forces of nottingham trying to roll up sherwood forrest, Continentals against revolutionaries, nazis trying to roll up resistance fighters, Allies trying to get Nazis, Americans against Viet Cong, US against Taliban, rebels against storm troopers, any scifi race against any OTHER scifi race.. The battle fits the narrative.
