Saturday the local HMGS-South group played a Napoleonic naval game using Ship of the Line rules and 1/1200 scale miniatures. link

Nice playing surface you have there. Our old SotL group had to make use of a blue cloth on which the grid was drawn (and there were a few wonky lines, I can tell you!) |

The black tangle is showing the wind direction, The French admiral must be mad ! Turning into the wind with a possibility of being court in irons with the British in side cannon rang. Madness I say madness ! |

There was another game link I saw on the SOG Anchorage where a British ship was doing the same thing. |

The black triangle does show the wind direction. It points into the wind like any wind vane would. The French 120 is sailing dead downwind. |

So the french have the weather gauge They do not look like they made the of it. We use an arrow to show the direction of the wind That put the battle in a different light. |

So do we Mac1638, but use an arrow. Maybe a triangle is different??? |

You would be surprised at how many landblubbers think that the arrow is flying downwind, rather than pointing into the direction that the wind is coming from. Or that an east wind is blowing into the east rather than coming from the east. |

Too true. In my group, the only two sailors (me and another guy) gave up trying to teach wind directions to the landlocked. Now we just call an east wind a wind coming from the east (even if we know its wrong). |

This is the first time I see it used in a wargame. Dose this mean you use Larboard and Starboard. We use Port and Starboard (post Napoleonic). We do not wish to over confuse the players, We do confuse them with the turning as the turn is notated by the helm. |
