After being a strictly Napoleonics wargamer for years, I've branched out recently with Late Antiquity, and now I'm jumping into the Dark Ages with an Anglo Saxon force for SAGA.

I've used the Gripping Beast Anglo Saxon Thegns and Dark Age Warrior box sets for my forces.

Really nice paint job…I'm getting into Saga myself soon…looking forward to paintingup something other than WW2 uniforms :) If I can do half as good a job as you've done I'll be happy

very nice !
i don't have the Anglo-Saxon rules but in general all members of a unit must be armed with the same weapon . i'm referring to your 4 levy armed with slings . the unit might have to be all bows or all slings unless an exception is made for A-S . or unless your local opponents don't mind !

Very nice job painting the leg wrappings---always a problem area for me, I'm afraid.

I gleefully mix swordsmen, axemen, and spearmen in my warrior and hearthguard units. However, missile guys are different, and I agree his goal should be to get 12 slingers. That said, my Anglo-Saxons have eight archers, bulked out with four other guys for a 12 man levy unit. I will deal with this--one day! In the menatime, my local opponents don't mind.

Great looking Saxons!

Bows and slings have the same range and no special rules, unlike crossbows and javelins, so I mix them as it gives a more ragtag appearance.

As said above bows and slings are the same rules wise, so you can have a mix. But spear armed levy are quite different rules wise – so it would help to have units of each.

I think you also only have 2pts of troops, 1pt of levy, and 1pt of Warriors. The Warlord is free.
You could split the Warriors to make 2pts of Hearthguard as they are only 1pt for 4 models.
Hearthguard are very good in a fight, but can be rather vulnerable to missiles. The AS battle board also favours big units, so you will end up needing a big army.

You can probably use the same figures for an Anglo-Danish army, which makes better use of smaller units – and is perhaps a bit easy to play to start with.

I like that banner; hand painted?

Thanks for the clarification, chaps.

Looks like I've got some more painting to do! I'm thinking of getting some Eureka archers to pad out the Fyrd making a mix of slingers, bowmen and javelinmen. Will that fly?

@FMB – No, the banner was one that came in the box with the Griping Beast Anglo-Saxons. The Lamb of God as the symbol of blood-thirsty killers!

No, like I said earlier javelins have special rules. First, they only have a medium range, 6 inches. Second, is the special rule: "Javelins may be used at the end of a Movement activation. Immediately after movement, if the unit has no figures engaged in melee with the enemy, the unit may perform Shooting as part of that activation. This doesn't count as a separate activation and doesn't generate additional Fatigue."

I don't think the slings mixed with bows matters. I think the intent was more for something like the 2 handed battle axe where it changes the units armor or mixing Hearthguard and warriors. Bows and slings have the same range for shooting. It just says they have to be of the same class. I only have the first book so Anglo Saxons may have a weapon restriction I'm unaware of, apologizes if so.
