If you were just starting out and wanted to go with 28mm what rules and figures would you use? And why?

Timmo uk10 May 2014 3:25 p.m. PST

I'd find the rules I like first then work out what the best scale is to achieve the type of game I want to play.

I would use Song of Drums and Shakos, because it is an amazingly simple yet fun blackpowder game that handles 1700-1865 nicely. And I most prefer skirmish gaming. Unsure on figures, but definitely 28mm.

we're currently playing Longstreet from Sam Mustafa . we're using 10mm but the game will work in any scale .
for 28mm the obvious starting point would be Perry plastics

28mm is about as small as I want to paint. I would ike to do Jackson's valley campaign so not really large rmies if that helps?

Brother versus Brother is the skirmish rules I use – for 28mm I would use Longstreet or Black Powder

Figs – Perry Plastics are a great start – I also have Dixon, Foundry and Renegade – plus of course the metal Perrys

"On to Richmond" rules.
Sash & Saber ACW figures.

If you go with Sash and Saber then you can also use Old Glory second edition ACW. They were sculpted by the same person. One thing that I like about the Sash and Saber sets is that there are 40 different poses in the basic Union and Confederate troops. They are sold in bags of 10 figures. You get a bag of command and then three bags of infantry.

I think that these are all marching poses. Then there are firing line sets and special units like Iron Brigade and such. Cavalry mounted and dismounted, artillery and much more.

Here is that link.

And as I mentioned above, the Old Glory second edition figures fit in perfectly. Here is their link.

I play using Black Powder, but I would like to try Longstreet one day.

I hope this helps you.

I also like Perry and have foundry as well. The Perry range fits in nicely with Sash and Saber.

Perry Miniatures because the plastic figures are cheap. Black Powder for a nice straightforward rule set with lots of tweakability!

Terrible Sharp Sword from TwoFatLardies is the best 28mm ACW set I have ever played.

Regimental fire and fury by far

Guns at Gettysburg is a good set, supported by four scenario books.

I'd go with 28mm Sash & Saber and play "Johnny Reb 2"! A close second would be RF&F.
