Terrains4Games company has shown on its Facebook profile few new photos of a table built with buildings from its Laser-Cut range of terrain accessories. Some photos show new, previously unpublished buildings – suburban and country style houses.

Nice effect, but I'm really not a fan of laser-cut ruined buildings. Everything is too crisp and smooth. Now, for regular intact structures laser-cut seems fine.

Yes, needs piles of rubble to make an acceptable model.

I think that MDF ruins are a start point but not an end. Masses of rubble is very important, I agree, but I think these ones would need more work: timbers poking out from under the broken floors, other piles of detritus lying around and wall edges that aren't quite so 'single layer' jagged: walls on multi-story buildings tend not to be made of just one layer of bricks (or one layer of anything) and so the layers tend to split at different points making for a more 'crumbled' look (I can't think of what else to call it) on the broken wall edges.

The only way you are going to get that all on a pre-made ruined building is on a resin item, I think. MDF can be worked up but it's closer to being aa helping hand and a starting point for a scratch build, rther than a finished thing, IMHO.

Still, a good start is still a good start.

John T – I agree totally. And while the smell of burnt wood may be considered an additional level of realism I really don't think that MDF kits are really suitable for as much as people use them for.

So models of wooden buildings look fine (the Wild West is ideal for them) but NW European buildings – I'd say not really without a good deal of work. Essentially they can be a nice basis to hang additional work on but not much more.

And, lets face it – that table probably costs a fair old amount to fill with MDF kits. For ruins, I'd say you can probably do far better scratchbuilding.

Being reminded that this is only 15mm. How would John T or the others build up ruined buildings that would be to their satisfaction?

I concur when it comes to 25mm buildings- I use foam core art board as the medium for building up my ruins. But, 1/8 foam core is too think for a wall in 15mm scale. Therefore, I am at a loss as to how to go about making adequate ruins in 15mm. Until I can find a better way to do it, laser cut works for me.
