Got the Sails of Glory game for my birthday, and got it out yesterday for the first game – the Little Prince and I took the French, while the Missus and the Prince's friend Sujay took the Brits

The Missus and I took the frigates while the Prince and his buddy took the ships of the line. We used the basic game which played fairly well (I think) – the Prince and his buddy maneuvered their ships to about a cable's length apart and then blasted each other to bits a point-blank range, the smoke clearing to show both of them sinking slowly into the sea; the Missus and I did some too-and-fro but as I had the French frigate I had a bit of an advantage which became even moreso when I managed to cross her front and put a broadside into her ship – at which point she headed for safer waters

The game played a lot easier than the naval games I recall from my mis-spent youth, so I look forward to many more games!

The rules build the game into something a lot deeper than the basic game. Quite cleverly constructed in that they can be added on in blocks.

Sail adjustment is a biggie, as are types of ammo. Add those when you feel comfortable and there will be a lot more period flavour.
