Having done several 'gaming on a pinboard' type posts, this is the first post to show some of those ideas actually in action as I take a Kursk based scenario out for a playtest with my own rules. Showing the Kallistra 4" hexes on a pinboard.

Sorry I haven't commented on this previously, but I've been following your posts for a while and just joined your blog. I've got to say your stuff is beautiful, and I'm super envious, so clean in the colors, lines, and terrain, I just love the look of it. I'll trade ya!

If I recall correctly, previously (at least at some point) you were using some version of "Portable Wargames Rules," but now you're using your own. I'd love to see them if they're available.

V/R,
Jack

Hello Jack, thanks for commenting and in particular for supporting the blog, it does help in keeping the blogging motivation going for long posts. I have just been admiring your Vietnam game that you posted about today. 10mm is a nice scale.

I had not used Bob's portable system, but have always been a fan of the gaming ethos that he promotes and his enthusiasm in promoting 'the smaller game'.

I am a boardgamer of old, so the marriage of figures and grids feels quite natural to me and it has taken a few years of stop – start buying and putting together small boards to get to this point.

The recent posts on pinboard gaming have just been a more determined focus on getting something small and portable up and running at last and has been a genuine 'starting from scratch' project in terms of ideas and materials and the uncertain direction that it followed and the evolution of the project does seem to have resonated with other like minded gamers.

The rules come from a system that I devised for a DTP boardgame (using squares) that I put up as a low cost download on a download site a couple of years ago and which themselves grew out of hex / figure game set that I started out with some years ago.. I have just basically converted the rules (back) to a hex figure game.

I have been working on the rules to make them tighter and getting rid of ambiguity and have been at a bit of a crossroads as what to do with them. There is a potential commercial aspect (I am being published later this month on a ziplock style boardgame, so the potential of putting this WWII system out commercially has not been lost on me) but I am presently more minded to put these out and share them as free rules with some scenario support etc. I just need a little more time as they go into a round of a final tidy up and I sort some artwork out.

Again, thanks for the post, your enthusiasm is much appreciated. Norm.

Norm,
Great report about your pinboard battle!! I have some 1mm and 2mm Napoleonics laying around so I am very interested in your project and rules.

Norm,

Good to go, thanks. And, believe me, I understand about the need for support from the community for the blogs. I think a lot folks don't understand how much work it is to not just do all the wargaming stuff, but then to take the time to photograph and write everything up. So, I appreciate all your hard work and apologize for not commenting earlier.

I've found the pinboard idea fascinating, and I'm taking a great interest in your rules as well. My heart will always lie with WWII, plus the scale you're working at, and the style and simplicity are very attractive. I look forward to seeing them, however you decide to release them, and if you're looking for any help (playtesting, etc…), I offer my services, meager as they are.

Sorry about the mix-up with Bob's rules, I swear I'd seen one of your batreps linked to from his site, but must be wrong. In any case, lately I'm really into the small, simple, and quick.

Take care, and keep the posts coming. I'm looking forward to hearing more about German progress at Kursk!

V/R,
Jack

I have added a brief overview of a re-run of that scenario before making changes, please see the last part of the post (under the sub-heading 'substantial edit'). I enjoyed the second game more than the first.

I'm a fan of the "little wars" myself:

Look forward to seeing the battle. I like the rivers, very natural sense of flow by being able to wander within the width of the material.

Would love to take a look at your rules when they become available (unless I missed them on your site)
