… electronic jamming backpack to counter IEDs.

"The U.S. Marine Corps has selected Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) to provide electronic jamming backpack systems to counter the threat of roadside improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Under the Counter Radio-controlled IED Electronic Warfare Marine Expeditionary Unit Special Operation Capable, or CREW MEU (SOC), contract, Northrop Grumman will deliver and support five initial production systems for testing.

The maximum ceiling for the firm-fixed-price, indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ), multiple award contract is $90 USD million over five years. The initial contract awarded to Northrop Grumman by PMS (Program Manager, Ships)–408 via the Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico, Va., was $4.1 USD million for five initial CREW MEU (SOC) systems. The Navy will purchase an indefinite number of systems in accordance with an IDIQ award.

Northrop Grumman is offering its Freedom 240 for CREW MEU (SOC) that provides precision electronic jamming of a wide range of IEDs and is designed to create a protective barrier around a Marine ground combat team and their equipment while minimizing disruption to friendly communications systems…"

$90 USD Million for a cell phone and RC jammer?? unreal. They will just keep using hard wired and trip wired IED nothing will jam them.

On another note I bet I could build a detonator system that started a bombs timer when the jammer moved into range, and I only did 1 year of training making electronics before I moved to IT.

Hi, Ron. We're from the Government. We happened to be reading TMP, and . . .

Scenario 1: We'd like to take you up on your offer of a cheaper alternative, plus the development of additional countermeasures.

Scenario 2: We hope you enjoy the weather in Cuba.

WOW! Is it me or does that photo just scream "Shoot at this guy"

It's not a jammer antenna for IEDs; it's actually part of the new Combat Souffle Support System; the US military's (and US Air Force) attempt to provide gourmet food to the troops in the field. The antenna-looking part is the wisk, combat-ready, double-ended, extra large, spring-loaded and is in the "ready" position. It's double-ended to support both the large and extra-large versions of the bowl, mixing, combat ready currently in use in field kitchens and some mess halls. This photo was taken during a recent field test that was ambushed by the Taliban. During the attack, a piece of shrapnel sliced through this soldier's quiche, deflating it and forcing the entire platoon to resort to scrambled eggs for breakfast.

I'm looking forward to seeing this in one of the new Ospreys and painting up several of the inevitable Oddzial Osmy figures in 3mm.

The cynic in me wonders how hard it would be to make a "HARM"-style seeker head for a mortar shell or an RPG-7/9/whatever…

Gotta figure a few ounces of infantry-portable high-explosive/Frag designed to seek in on emitting antennas would only be MORE useful as time goes on….

Ron W DuBray02 May 2014 8:06 a.m. PST

true BigNickR a seeker bomb would work with all the EM troopers are going to be putting out. I was just thinking of things a low tech force could put in the field to attack this waste of money. I worked out last night in my head how to use a cell phone to start a timer when you jam it. Opps no bars 30,29…2,1,BOOM! Its so easy, I'm sure the IED builders can work it out with no problems.

when I first read the head line on this post I was hopping they were going to build an unmaned A10 type air craft for to USMC.

The U.S. military procurement system swings into action, to spend millions on the latest gee whiz technology.

An young Afghan figures out the countermeasure two months later on a hillside in Khost, for $50 USD worth of equipment purchased in the bazaar in Peshawar.

In Afghanistan, the Flintstones and the Jetsons are fighting, and the Flintstones are winning.
