Just saw these new 1/35 kits on Hobby Link Japan. I've never heard of these conversions before. Are these fairly standard Yugoslav mods or just some weird one-off field conversions?

I don't know how common they were, but if GHQ made them in 6mm I might have to come up with a reason to buy some, as I really like them.

The Stuart V (M3A3) was used by the Yugoslav 1st Tank Brigade, a unit raised on Bari by the British in the summer of 1944. This unit was given fifty six Stuart Vs, and landed on the Yugoslav coast in the autumn of 1944. It was used to support Tito's partisans. In November 1944 the unit captured a German arsenal at Sibenki and used the captured weapons to modify some tanks. A number were given 2cm FlaK 38 anti-aircraft guns, while at least one got the 7.5cm PaK 40 anti-tank gun. In each case the turret was removed to make space for the new guns.

That Pak 40 makes a lot better use of the M3 chassis than as a slightly more than useless light tank.

If you're fighting German/Axis anti-partisan units in Yugoslavia, the M3 is pretty effective. High speed, good handling, and reliability, baby!

I can see something like that on an AK-47 battlefield.

That would be an interesting FOW unit…

You have to wonder why the heck the Americans didn't improvise stuff like this? After the Normandy breakout they would have had hundreds of captured PAK 40s (and bigger!) and all the ammo they'd ever need. I suppose being on the offensive most of the time, lightly armored tank-killers wouldn't have been as useful.

I would think that the US need for lightly armoured tank-killers was pretty much satisfied by the M18 tank destroyer (AKA Hellcat).

As for that Yugoslavian M3/PaK40 combo, it somehow reminds me of the Marder tank destroyers that Germans built by bolting 75 or 76.2 mm ATG on spare tank chassis. Probably equally roomy crew compartment, too.

What Doug said. I'd love to get a few if GHQ decides to make them.

Doesn't look like they are difficult to kit bash one in 15mm, or even one in 6mm. Take the chassis of a M3A3 or M8 HMC, add the gun, bits of plasticard and voila!

I think Milicast do them in 1/76
