Hi all, with some trepidation (for a non-ancients guy) starting a Pyrrhic army for the campaign in Italy. Made good progress on my research, just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of their favourite unit from below and the best (in your opinion) 28mm miniatures that could be used: "MERCENARY HORSE.. (includes Acarnanian, Aitolians, Macedonians, and Athamanians)" Armed with swords, and javelins. May have peltas (bucklers). or Medium shields. Many thanks for any help. |

Aventine is probably the best for 28mm Pyrrhic cavalry. |

IMHO ,the following Aventine,Gorgon,Crusader, Polmarch Relic,Foundry and Old Glory. I have these companies figures in my Pyrrhic cavalry. Mike Adams |

I tend to agree, the Aventine stuff looks really good. I guess, not to put too fine a point on it, I don't know what these mercenary cavalry would look like? Aventine make Agema, Thessalians and Tarentines (from memory, I don't seem to be able to get onto their website atm): 2 out of the 3 would be unsuitable for representing the above unarmoured mercenary horse? |

Managed to get onto the Aventine site. I have no idea how I missed them, but they do sell Greek light cavalry with JLS. Question answered! |

In addition it is worth looking at the Successor range by 1st Corps – plenty of pics on their site and, like the other manufacturers, they do discounts. |

Of the Aventine chaps, the Greek lights in hats (PYR16 & 17) are dead-on for mercenary hillbillies; I'd also happily use the Italian lights (PYR02-04). PYR01 are fantastic figs – have 'em myself – but perhaps a little *too* Italian (certainly the guy in the triple-disc cuirass.) |

Pyrrhus' mercenary cavalry were Hellenistic troops, but they adopted shields from the Italians while there. I don't know where the idea of bucklers come from, Italian cavalry shields were quite large. |

Yes the list allows for 'medium shields,' but in fairness to JJ that part of the text got cut off when I cut and paste it in
edit: looking at my original post, I did include the medium shields. I would say the buckler option is for when they were fresh off the boat which is totally fine by me. Even assuming that ALL mercenary cavalry happened to universally adopt larger shields (which is of course impossible to prove) |

I don't think they had bucklers when they landed, iirc Pyrrhus introduced cavalry shields to the Eastern Med system after Italy, tll then it was a Western Med thing. But for all I know some italiote or Poeni cavalry they met in italy or Sicly had bucklers. |

Another vote for Aventine, which IMHO is the best cavalry out there, but you should also take a look at Relic Miniatures, some pretty nice stuff too. |

I used Tin Soldier. A mixture of Greek, Latain and Macedonian Cav. |
