Hopefully the title says it all. I'm going to need a crowd of civilians for several of the scenarios in my campaign. Since most of the locales so far envisioned are to be in Greenland, I'm looking for civilians in winter clothes, or at least dressed to be outside, not in shirt sleeves. If they were sci fi as well, that would just be value added.

I was hoping that I could find some 15mm or 1/100 civilians in winter garb that were already pre-painted: A "mob-to-go" for the many crowd scenes and semi-urban engagements I have planned.

Any ideas?

N Gauge Model Railroad civilians? Actually should be TT scale, but I'm not sure if figures exist in that size.

Quite a daunting task you've got there. As far as gaming figures go I don't believe you'll have much success. search around for model railroad figures like the Preiser line. Walther's carries a lot of their stuff plus many others.

TNE2300: Thanks. I plan on using the Unarmed Antarctic Civilians as some resistance fighter characters, and the Armed Antarctic Civilians will be the backbone of the Insurgent/Rebel/Irregular forces. I'm also looking for a quick crowd of mostly unarmed "innocent bystanders". Cheers.

TK 421 & nnascati: Thanks. Good ideas. I'll look into both of those suggestions.

I've seen these a few times in my "1/100 scale" searches.

Not sure how they can be both "HO scale" and "1/100 scale". They look a bit big. They're usually around a hundred for three bucks.

I run across these and "architectural figures" crowd quite a bit. These are a bit bright for my vision of the scenario, but they may well work at this price. I think they're on ebay as well.

I was looking for something a little more "Northern" though. Maybe I can find an appropriate dip to tone down the clothing and make the skin tone believably "Greenland Indigenous" (always mor research to be done). I found a great crowd when I was thinking 54mm. Lots of brown greatcoats and olive jumpsuits in two-inch plastic army men.

Here they're described as "18mm". Looks like the unpainted version, about a quarter of the figures, for the same price (i.e. four times as much plus painting). Good info though. They call them suitable for either HO or TT.

I also discovered "3mm" or "finescale" 1/100 scale model railroading, but have yet to see a figure in that scale. 8)

Meanwhile ebay has zillions of versions of the painted and unpainted Chinese civilians, all around 4 bucks per hundred, listed as both "HO" and "1/100". For three bucks it might be worth a shot.

Thoughts?

Those pre painted figs, with a little extra work and some washes could be used as zombie herds.

You won't find much 'TT' stuff around & it's generally 1/120 scale anyway, unless it's British outline.

HO is closer, especially given that '15mm' figures are generally bigger and chunkier than their plastic counterparts in Modelrailwayland…

Ha ha that's where my mind went straight to as well.

HO is 1/87, figures run about 19.5mm boots to top of head (because they're sculpted around a 5'8"/170cm or so person at 1/87 scale).

You can find architectural models at either 1/100 or 1/96 (aka 1/8" scale), though they might not be painted.

At ~$3 per hundred, it's hard to argue with the HO prepaints.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

Not easy for the novice to gauge size/scale, when doing mail order.

Thanks for the hint about 1/96 (1/8" scale).

And yeah, at 3 cents each for prepainted, I can deal with whatever arrives. Cheers.

Speaking of zombie herds, I forgot that I'll also need some panicked/terrified "after" sculpts as well, so I guess these civs will look like zombies, as they continue to enjoy their day in the park while all hell breaks loose around them, buying balloons for their daughters and watching old men doing tai chi. 8)
