Grandfather Alfred..99 years ago exactly he was preparing for one of the biggest days in his fortunately long life. And great uncle Ben as well.He didn't actually get out of the boat on that day and I have no picture of him. The good old 9th Battalion,my family regiment so to speak .Both in the "Storming Party" of the 3rd Brigade. Both sides of my family.

We'll be having Anzac biscuits and homemade Lamingtons (my grandmothers '20s recipe) at work in honour of my grandad's Light Horse mates.

Cardinal Hawkwood24 Apr 2014 6:06 p.m. PST

thanks all, though I don't hold with the footy thing.Alf was most probably the second soldier ashore..he met Simpson, he witnessed the torpedoing of the HMS Triumph,he was one of the last to withdraw fom Anzac, was part of the first major tank attack(failed) ,saw The two camels and the red triplane fly in front of his position in 1918,he survived the Western front, was a failed soldier settler farmer, what would you expect from a carpenter from Southend? Lived a long and at times traumatised life, became a self taught amateur Ancient Historian.Inveterate pipe smoker.Failed Mason.Founding Member of the Drummoyne RSL sub branch He died in November 1975 .I still often miss him 39 years after his death. Lest we forget!

(hrm, should I raise a glass of beer, some Scotch, or my usual "mourning the dead" of good tequila?)

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives … you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours … You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

Bundaberg rum would probably not be amiss!

Sparker27 Apr 2014 3:29 a.m. PST

Very moving Dawn Service at Old Bar, NSW. Small community, but at least 200 people turned up, including a fair few tourists like myself…

(Didn't expect to be singing 'God Save the Queen' again though!)

Lest we forget.

In the USA, they just ran "Breaker Morant" and "Gallipoli" back to back on TV. Great movies.

The ANZACs will always be remembered, at home and abroad.
