First English translation of Napoleon's Cavalry by Frédérick Masson. Illustrations by Édouard Detaille. Hardback; color cover; 240 pages; 31 full page black & white Detaille illustrations; $55 USD plus postage. Contact us: napoleonbooks@gmail.com First published in French in 1896, Napoleon's Cavalry was based on twenty years of research by Napoleonic historian Frédérick Masson. His purpose was "to define the figure of the cavalryman created by Napoleon." Masson avoids tactics and strategy; rather he emphasizes how Napoleon created "a system to provide the cavalry with proper cadres." Masson links hard, factual information about organization and manpower in a framework that emphasizes the personal and dramatic. For example, his dull-sounding first chapter, "Recruitment of the Staffs," is actually full of detailed and often amusing anecdotes about officers, both famous and little-known. As such, it illuminates how Napoleon exercised command and control over his mounted arm. Chapter I.The Recruitment of the Staffs Chapter II.Reserve Cavalry: King's Household Troops; Carabiniers; Grenadiers; Cuirassiers Chapter III. Line Cavalry: Dragoons; Chevaulegers; Chevaulegers-Lancers; Polish Chevaulegers of the Guard Chapter IV. Light Cavalry: Hussars, Chasseurs; Mamelukes |
