So I'm involved in the startup of a gaming store. CorSec has collocated to the site. We did the entire move during one of the laser cutter shutdowns. We have two bathrooms and we could buy signs or even make boring ones but I have some black on white material that I can etch to make custom signs. However, I'm having problems coming up with gamer themed symbols for mens and womens. Someone mentioned meeples but I have not found a decent looking female meeple expample yet. I also thought of maybe a king and queen from chess. I'd like it to be kinda generic as far as game types go. We will have a lot of card and board gamers as well as miniature gamers. Anyone have any ideas? |

Fancy store with a men's AND women's bathroom! My first thought was meeples

We have comfy rolly chairs too. We are basically taking everything typically associated with a game store and throwing it out the window. Big bright space with an open floor plan that is 90% gaming space. A focus on new gamers and basically ignoring the old ones. Not neglecting mind you but income from them isn't even in the business plan. Too hard to compete with internet prices. I'd rather focus on regular events and demos to get people in the door and then engaged. Also no MTG or 40k in the store. Games are fine but no stock or events. |

How about a king or queen from a deck of cards? |
Timotheous | 22 Apr 2014 5:57 p.m. PST |
Or how about tiles from Scrabble? XX for women, XY for the men's room. |
Valerik | 22 Apr 2014 6:11 p.m. PST |
I do like the XX & XY idea, assumes knowledge though
Might need to add appropriate biologic symbols. Most amusing I ever encountered was in a "high dive" bar in Huntington, WV, back in the mid 70's. They used pictures of dogs, backed up by titles: "Pointers" "Setters" Seemed to work well enough, for a place of that ilk at least.
I sincerely hoped the PINK Room was in better repair, or at last cleaner, than BLUE Room I queued for
Overall that entire evening was an
experience, not much else. I saw no need to repeat the exercise. BGR

I don't know about the outside signs, but I definitely think that there needs to be a sign inside that says; "All guests must wash hands before throwing dice". |

also inside, "That is no Moon!" |

I've seen different Magic The Gathering posters (I know your store won't have Magic) hung up in two unrelated game stores over a couple hundred miles apart. Each store had drawn a speech balloon for the hero/villain in the poster so he was addressing the bathroom user. One poster said only to wee in the toilet (not floor, not door handle, not sink) and that folks who didn't wash hands would have their hands catch on fire. The other store's poster said the mens restroom went on about snot being repeatedly wiped on the walls. It threatened they would be permanently closing the mens room if they found one more, just one more 'booger' on the wall. |

I like the chess or playing card King and Queen. Unless you go with a Napoleonic or Victorian style lord and lady, I don't think you'll be able to get generic and convey the meaning. |

As LGS employee, not selling magic is a rough decision, that is a fairly sizable revenue stream you are completely ignoring, and that helps all the other games by not only bringing in revenue, but potential players (we have quite a bit of crossover into board games and miniatures from our magic crowd). Maybe it is to not compete with a friendly magic shop or other situation, but don't discount it because of the stigma it gets from certain crowds. |

We may buy small runs of the latest magic stuff and discount it to off load it quickly with a bit a profit but magic is handled by 2 or 3 other shops in town and we know nothing about it. So we would end up fighting for every inch of ground in a system we are unfamiliar with. We have other plans for the card gamers. The LCG format is easier on the wallet and I can get you into 3 or 4 different games. No one does those in town and they are frankly less hassle. Plus we will be the only place in town open late as it is. Everyone else is only open late for friday night magic. So we are basically guaranteed to get all non magic players in here on Fridays. We also don't have to mess with the singles market for cards that usually takes an entire employee specialized in it to make it work. I might change my tune if the numbers don't work out but in theory we will appeal to a wider audience and create more gamers by avoiding the systems that tend to be isolationist. When I see serious cash being dropped in a store it's usually during an upgrade moment. We want to concentrate on that. A non-gamer becoming a gamer or a non-painter being taught basic painting skills. I did some estimating on the income from a typical magic player and I think the majority of the income is because they tend to bread like rabbits. They and 40k players also have a high burnout rate. I'd rather you buy a $400 USD warmachine army once and sit in my comfy chairs buying $5 USD-$15 in snacks twice a week. |

As for the signs. We don't want to put cheesy signs inside the bathrooms. I'm more interested in a gamer equivalent to mens and womens. We do have a running theme of yetis for the store. I have a main store logo that is a friendly yeti. I might have to have my artist do a female version and come up with some Himalayan or yeti themed names. |
