Does anyone have 15mm SYW Figures by Blue Moon? They look like interesting figures but I can't seem to get over two characteristics of the sculpting
1. Some legs look like tree trunks in this scale. Same is true in their 28s.
2. There seem to be some very nice faces and some faces that are completely deformed. One example is the French artilleryman from the recent announcement. He looks like he's taken a canon ball to the old puss.

I can get over the first but the faces are really holding me at bay. Seems like this could be an easy fix or a quality control issue but new batches keep getting turned out with this issue. I applaud the speed at which the line is being developed but a little more care could make it a great range. As is, it's not likely to pull me away from OG 15s.

For those of you that already have BM, are the faces that bad in person?

Anyone else on the fence for these reasons?

Hmmn, I've painted quite a number of Blue Moon 15mm Colonials and 28mm Pulp figures for folks, and never experienced the problems you noted. I am impressed overall by the quality of the 15mm figures especially.

I painted up a bunch of Blue Moon Napoleonic French infantry and am quite happy with them. They are the best looking infantry in my French army.

If you don't like them buy something else. There are tons of choices out there. You don't need any validation. Some guys see it like you and others don't.

The figures are all off the same dollies ?? Might just be the photo?

I have this with my BM pirates. Some are really nice and some are not so hot. The couple other people who have seen them point it out right away. It looks like two different people worked on the same pack. Still, I like them. though they have remained partially painted for four years now.

That's I why I don't buy the BM ACW figures. They are too goofy and odd for my tastes, which lean toward AB even if more expensive (I can afford them, so I don't care).

Faces at 15mm from several feet away are just pale spots. Even more so on a base with 6 or 8 other figures. Never bought any 15s in the last 30+ years due to the quality of the faces. I was upset once with some Russians for a Russo-Japanese range due to the fact they didn't have bayonets on their rifles. Got upset that some Dervish riflemen had bayonets on their rifles.

CPBelt, all of the pirate figures are by the same designer, Chris Hughes from Sash and saber and there are no distorted faces.
I know OG casts the Blue Moon figures, but I have been buying army men for 40years and the Blue moon ACW figures are some of the best I have ever seen--I know good figures when I see them.

I love the Blue Moon 18mm ranges, I don't have a problem with their faces. I've bought Marlburlian, FFL, Darkest Africa, WW1, Pirates (though I sold them unpainted), and Plains Wars.
But if you don't like them, then don't buy them. I do agree with the statement about en masse who really looks at their faces anyhow.

Did I say "distorted"? I think not. I said some are better than others in the packs, or not as good as others depending on one's point of view. I like them and would buy them again--I wish the line would expand even more.

They remain partially or unpainted because I associate them with my father's death a few years ago. I am finally getting over that and am looking forward to returning to them this summer.

The ACW just don't do it for me, which is no big deal. Just my 1 cent. Some people like red beets and some people don't. Some people love pork, and some people vomit at the smell of pork cooking. (I'm in the latter of each!) wink

I have piles of Blue Moon's French & Indian war range. I've seen what you're talking about. A few of the Native Americans I have could stand in as orcs from Jackson's Lord of the Rings. But, as I said, I have piles of minis. I like them overall. I just remember that in real life, some people are pretty and others…less so.

And as everyone's been saying, who can tell at 2 feet away?

I love my Blue Moon 18mm AWI figures. I think they have great proportions and look more human than most 15mm figures.

I bet I have painted around 5000 of the ACW range and a hundred or so of the WSS range and I love the figs. They sell like hotcakes as soon as I post them. That being said, I completely agree with the faces issue, although the one fig in question looks like it might be camera angle or something because there is a chin. My gripe is with one face and it's probably one in ten but the fig is clean shaven with a nose that starts in the forehead and chinless. There was a higher proportion of them in the WSS packs since it's a little more generic.

The faces in the SYW and AWI range look great but it also makes the very small percentage of bad ones stand out more. That's my opinion, I love OG and I respect the massive amounts of effort they've put into all the Blue Moon ranges, but I think the criticism of some of the faces is valid.

this is the kind of thing you notice upclose, but from far away its not noticable. the only prob i have with OG/BM is that there are maybe four good poses then two really weird ones, like the arms and legs are positioned like the guy has just been given a wedgie….

Odins Warrior23 Apr 2014 4:35 p.m. PST

It's hard for me to understand the disparity in the quality. In today's release the AWI flag bearer's face is fantastic. The whole figure is actually. I actually appreciate the durability of the oversized flag staff.

But that being said the artillery men on the same release look like aliens. The guy on the bottom right has legs as big as his waist and what looks like a shrunken head on his shoulders.

I don't mean any offense Russ. I have piles of OG figures. Just providing some feedback on the line. We all benefit by having great lines and options available to us. Just wishing that there was a little more consistency put into the line.

Thanks for listening.

Honestly, I don't see what the problem is. I don't own any BM figures, and so I'm going by the photos only, but these figures look great to me. I'm not a 15mm gamer and I'm not sure I ever will be, but these look like really nice figures: legs, faces, poses…everything.
