"In the annals of British military history, there are few greater stories than the desperate expedition mounted by Captain Robert Rogers and his command through miles of unforgiving North American wilderness in the bleak autumn of 1759. Quebec, the French power-base, had fallen, but there were still plenty of scores to be settled in the struggle to control a rich new world. Rogers and his men were on their way to destroy the Abenaki Indian village on the St Francis River. Encouraged by their French allies, the Abenakis had been raiding theNew England frontier for years. With the exception of the battle for Quebec, the chess-game manoeuvres on open battlefields that characterised 18th century warfare in Europe had little place in the forests and rugged terrain of North America

Watching the new mini-series TURN. Rogers is depicted as quite a nasty guy in this. Well nasty if you are a revolutionary anyway. Being played by Angus MacFayden who was Robert the Bruce in Braveheart. |

Wait, a US programme depicts a prominent loyalist as a nasty piece of work – whatever next! ;-) To be fair, he does seem to have developed quite a few 'issues' by that point and was as confused as to his loyalties as many in North America at the time. |

Conquest Miniatures makes a set of Colonial Rangers in 28mm that are very nice. I own about 28 of them or so. I used Army Painter's Army Green spray to paint them and I think they turned out serviceable. I'm at work or I would link some pictures of them. Galloping Major does a few groups of ‘Anglo-American rangers' in their FIW range that would also work and have received good reviews. I'm sure there are others, North Star and Old Glory maybe. MacFayden rocks at Rogers. I'm enjoying the fable Turn. |

The Conquest ones, although lovely, are a lot smaller than the Galloping Major ones. They don't go togther at all. |

I've painted all the rangers that are made by Galloping Major, and they are fantastic! He's even sculpted a command group that has a figure sculpted based on a painting of Rogers and a figure based on

The real question is "Who does NOT make 28mm Rogers Rangers?" I have always been puzzled why Rogers is given such respect. His main exploit in the FIW was a failed and botched attack, followed by a pursuit he barely survived. And then I have to wonder why the US Army Rangers adopted him as their patron saint. It would make as much sense to name the Pentagon the Benedict Arnold Office Building. |

Never done one of these before, let's give it a try
Rogers did many very useful things for the war effort whether you like him or not. Some folks love to hate him so they can show off their knowledge of minutia, but in general he was a capable field commander that lived through some pretty amazing times and experiences and had the gall to write it down. Sure, he most likely exaggerated, but still pretty cool stuff to read about. |

That's a fairly obnoxious statement to make. How the hell do you think you can know what my motives are??? |

Hmmm
I said some folks. Are you one of those folks? If not, you shouldn't be offended. |

Ooooh I love a good Rogers Rangers thread. |
spontoon | 22 Apr 2014 4:27 p.m. PST |
Robert Rogers was a xenophobic, anti-Catholic, perjuror, embezzler, was cashiered from the British forces, tried for cannibalism, exceeded his mandate in every way on the St. Francis raid ( in fact there had been no raids from St. Francis; they were trying to stay neutral!), delayed as long as possible in his attempt to relieve Detroit during Pontiac's uprising; an all 'round rotter if you ask me. Therefore the perfect model for the U.S. Rangers! |

spontoon, everyone was anti-catholic in those days, otherwise spot on! |

xenophobic, anti-Catholic, perjuror, embezzler I'd say that made him perfect officer material for the colonies in the day. cashiered from the British forces puts him in good company tried for cannibalism That's just silly, likely true, but silly none the less in fact there had been no raids from St. Francis; they were trying to stay neutral! I wasn't aware there was a litmus test that a community on the frontier had to pass to be the subject of a raid. Did anyone tell the French or their allies? delayed as long as possible in his attempt to relieve Detroit during Pontiac's uprising Didn't know about this one, but I'd like to read about it, I don't know enough about the rebellion and I think it's got some great gaming potential. an all 'round rotter Sounds like a guy I would have hung with in my bachelor days. Provided he would lift his anti-catholic views for a while. |
nochules | 23 Apr 2014 10:09 a.m. PST |
I think all the charges are fair except for the Detroit one. Rogers wanted more time to get provincials to accompany the relief efforts (there ended up being 7 IIRC). Based on how badly Bloody Run went, having some more guys with experience fighting against Indians might not have been such a bad thing. |

Words cannot express how I feel, less about Rogers, than his deification by the Americans! |
