Son has 4th Ed, soI thought I'd have a look for changes from my 1st Edition days. Creating a Ranger…

'Armor proficiency' is a feat, which allows armour to be worn. The Ranger class description gives Armour proficiencies as cloth, leather, hide. I take it as they are listed in the class description I get them automatically – ditto weapon proficiencies.

Do not need to take 'Armor Proficiency", take 'Unarmoured Agility' (can still wear leather armor)

Yes, you get them automatically.

As noted above

Yes you start with these. You gain feat slots as you go up levels and can choose to take the feats for other types of armor. I believe next is chainmail then scale then plate. These of course contend with other possible feats; this is how you develop your vision of the character.

the other thing I will say is the big difference, 4th ed rewards the pcs working together, its full of things that "buff" the other pcs but little on powering up yourself. It makes selfish powergaming rather more difficult. ( which is not a bad thing imho)
