I found this at Home Depot last weekend for $10 USD:

It's pretty much white rubber spray, but it's not meant to be pealed off like the other stuff I've seen.

I used to get my mats from theterrainguy.com, but he's since closed up shop and even before that he stopped making a snow mat before I could pick one up. Given that, I'm going to try this stuff out to make my own. To wit, the plan is:

1) Spray down a coat of this stuff on a vinyl mat and let dry
2) Spray again, sprinkle some tan flock and then cover it in snow flock
3) Once dry, shake the excess off

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried this before? I'm going to start off by trying it on some small scatter pieces for forests.

Have not tried it before but I'll be interested to hear how it works for you.

Thanks

Well, if nothing else you can use your game mat as a boat when it is done…

(from the competitors commercial…)

I'll only commit to that if Jack LaLanne will tow it 70 miles…

I will, however, post some pics once I finish a small forest section.

Have you tried Latex paint over felt? Sprinkle on the turf while wet. Once dried it should hold if you roll it up, loosley

I am interested in seeing the results as well. Out of curiosity why are you using a vinyl mat as opposed to cloth?

Thanks.

It might be a two person job, one to spray and one to sprinkle – depending on how fast the rubber cures when it hits the mat.

I've seen someone use a vinyl mat as the base and then rolled on paint used for non-slip surfaces on top of campers/RVs. When dry, it rolls up without damage (playing surface inwards).

Why not start with white felt and 5 cans of spray paint? This seems like it will be expensive, and time consuming.

Curious how big an area one $10 USD can covers (compared to $10 USD worth of white felt).

And what kid of flock do you want on your snow?

I used vinyl because that's what I had. :P

It pretty much went exactly as I wrote above, the results are up on my blog:

Skip the textured mats – buy some artist's canvas and just paint it as you like, the 'texture' comes from the canvas. Or, if you really want to go whole hog, glue on a layer of plain old sandbox sand and then paint that – and then seal the heck out of it.

I ended up going with a different green flock in the end, here's a shot with some trees I put together too:
