"The uniforms of the Janissary Corps, between 1799 and 1826 (with the final abolition of the corps) is difficult to identify, because they are often represented using illustrations dating as far back as the 16th century. •Over this period, effectively two military organisations existed in the Ottoman empire – the troops of the New Model Army (which itself was composed of largely former Janissary, and European officers), and the Janissary corps themselves.
•Along side which was the Artillery Corps, and the Sipahi Cavalry (both of whom had been strong political supporters of military reform in the Ottoman empire). The Janissary Corps was not the main force of the Ottoman military. In the classical period, Janissary Corps comprised only one tenth of the overall Ottoman army, while the traditional Turkish cavalry forces were the main battle force. The Sipahi cavalry constituted the main Turkish force of the army, along with the Artillery corps. As well, there were various national Auxiliary troops, pictured below…" link link From here.

Very useful. BTW, you can get a recording of the Janissary band of Turkey. I have it and it is marvellous. Would make a great sound track to accompany a spot of Turkenkreig. |
