Her American boyfriend is arriving about four hours from now, and they have a new (rented) home where they will be living together. He plans to start a business in the Philippines.

Yes, it is completely appropriate. Julia works here, and is part of TMP. She wanted to share her happiness with everyone.

People comment on this sort of stuff all the time, there are birth announcements, big birthdays, comments about getting new jobs and on and on. Why would it be different for an editor, except it might be even more appropriate.

People make all sorts of announcements on TMP – births, family milestones, deaths, pet stories. I think this is not an inappropriate announcement in the circumstances.

Why not? Members post their milestones all the time here, so why not the people who run this place? Once I get a job back in my particular career field, you better believe I'll break out the balloons and bunting and hang them all over the TMP.

OK she has won the golden ticket and landed a foreign boyfriend! Having never met either of them and not knowing anything about them makes it hard for me to be interested in the slightest.

It's strange… The title of this thread was pretty obvious and self explanatory, if some people didn't want to read it why open it in the first place? As for "Not For Me" leaving over it, I suspect he was unhappy about something else and just using this as an excuse.

This is totally appropriate. Julia's part of the community and her good news should be cause for us all to smile.

The complainy-pants people who keep threatening to leave over stuff like this remind me of that guy in the NYTimes who identified himself as a loyal, long time member of party "A" who was quitting over the latest extremist position his party was taking, which proved that they were radical idiots. He got more than 20 letters like that published over a period of decades before someone realized it was the same guy again and again. It's not clear he was ever in party A to begin with. (Party id removed because it's not relevant here.)

It's purely artificial outrage. The whole point of TMP Talk is news about the site and community. This is germane to both.
