I am experimenting with making sand hills for Afghanistan using Shaper Sheet by Woodland Scenics. This is my first attempt at a small hill that is about 12 inches by 7 inches by 3 inches tall.Took about 45 to 50 minutes to make including drying time.I did not use the plaster which would make it more rigid and also require a longer drying time. I plan to use that method though on any future hills. Just wanted to see if it was feasible to start with. Also need to figure out the best way to base the hill.First cut the Shaper Sheet, form into a hill shape, spray with Krylon Natural Stone, let dry, spray with Woodland Scenics Yellow Ocher, spray with 3M Super 77 adhesive, dropped rough sand onto it in a random way, add Tajima stick on grass tufts. Really easy to do.

Great tip on using Shaper sheet from Woodland scenic. That is a very realistic hill.

Wow, that is a shockingly fast job for such a nice looking finish! If you can maintain that building speed, you could finish an entire mountain range -- or all the hills for Charasiab -- in one long weekend!

That was just a random sized hill that was formed in minutes. The difficulty will arise when trying to make hills to a specific size and contour and also incorporate place for the troops to stand. Also I really need to figure out how to base tha hill after it is formed.

One possible solution to the basing question is to use the simple, low-cost basing material I've been using for my single-contour "low sandy hills": 1' square self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles, as seen here, after being cut down to size with a strong pair of scissors --

Another possibility would be to try filling the interior/underside of the hill shell with spray from a can of Insulating Foam. It might work great, hardening and giving the hill a ton of strength -- or it might keep expanding and wreck the hill. It's worked for me in the past, but wiith shells made from stronger material. I think it would definitely be worth a try though, because if it does work, it would allow you to turn the attractive outer shell of the hill into a solid and substantial piece of terrain, all in a matter of a few more moments.

Whatever you do, Rhingyll, please keep us informed, with as many visual aids as possible!
