Many of the Tolkien oriented websites contain information that some elves and 4 of the seven dwarven clans dwelt in the land of Rhun during the time of the War of the Ring. While including that info they are really short on any citations to anything primarily or even secondarily canon. Does anyone know of a JRRT or CT tome that addresses these notions? Tks |

I've never seen a citation regarding Dwarves in the East. The notion of Elves around Rhûn goes back to some ambiguous remarks that might imply that Dorwinion is inhabited by Elves, but there wasn't a definitive answer. It's not out of the question, given the the Elves originally awoke far to the east even of Rhûn. |

I'll wait for a more esteemed scholar than me, but I'm certain that Dwarves living in the east is mentioned in several of the secondary works (Unfinished Tales, perhaps). -Will |

After a quick skim of the ICE modules for MERP/Rolemaster "Perils on the Sea of Rhun", and "The River Running" I found brief paragraphs on Dwarves and Elves in the area. Not sure that they contain any more useful information though. Any primary citations would take some digging. |

Also, in the Hobbit it mentions tribes of near wild Elves living in the Grey Mountains and other wild lands. |

I am by no means an authority so just a stab in the dark here. In the First Age before the lamps were destroyed by Melkor,the lamps were in the far east of Middle Earth and the elves were yet to be created. Aule, one of the gods, secretly created the dwarves but Illuvatar(God) found out and put the dwarves to sleep so that the elves would be the first born. Just a supposition but the elves woke in the far east, so perhaps the dwarves did too. Certainly Tolkien has the dwarves residing in the Iron Hills which are as about as far east as you can go on the original maps-just north of Rhun. It would seem likely that the dwarves migrated there from further east during the time of the stars before the sun and the moon were created. This account is probably as full of holes as a Bree cheese. |

Not all the elves went west after awaking, the Avari mainly remained in the east(some did move west, becoming the Silvan elves), these would be considered wild elves in comparison to those of the west. As for dwarfs, there are mentions of dwarf mansions in the east some of which have become evil, think the reference is in Peoples of Middle Earth |
