Approximately when did Soviet forces in Germany begin to switch over from BTR-60PB to BTR-70 and from BMP-1 to BMP-2?

There were very few BTR-70 in the GSFG. BMP based Motor Rifle regiments were mixed with no all BMP-2 regiments. There was a lot of discussion about this on the Yahoo TO&E group a few years ago.

Thanks very much!

Not sure on the BTR-70s, but read as above from others, that BMP-2s were not fielded in any quantity until the mid-late 1980s.

I think the BMP-1 was still predominant even at the fall of the Berlin Wall, but don't hold me to that. That's just the impression I have from reading other postings here.

I suspect the same probably applies to the BTR-60s as well, but again, am not sure.

BMP-1 and BTR-60PB still outnumbered later types by a wide margin in 1989/90. A lot (most?) of the BMP-1s had been upgraded to BMP-1P standard, with AT-4 'Spigot' replacing AT-3 'Sagger'.

Exactly what I needed to know. Thanks Mark

BTR-70… never (sarcasm alert- sort of)…

It was somewhat of a failed project. Production was very slow and I think was concurrent with BTR-60 production.

BMP2 started to appear in the early 80s. Ramp up started in 86 to coincide with the ramp up in T80 deployment. I think it actually ran somewhat ahead as T80s were delayed until 87-88.
