I have started a Boer War collection made up from Wargames Foundry and a few Perry Miniatures. Will any other ranges, like Old Glory or Rebout Enterprise, mix well with theses ?

Empress Miniatures. That's all I got…

Old Glory is ok with them. I have both. Black tree is a bit larger but i only use them for the dismounted Boers.

Hello…
I've quite a few of Boer War minis ..majority being Foundry and OG..i can say that they mix very well..if you want to add a different manufacture you could do as i intended to do…without any doubts choose Redoubt…their new Boer War range..in fact Second Boer War is more specific..the weapons of both British and Burghers are well researched..some peculiar uniform types are well represented..for example British infantrymen with a typical appearance in eqipment ecc..colonial troops in Bush Hats and Shirt Sleeve order (Grey)..Pom Pom guns with the correct shield and, above all, their scale and compability with the above mentioned manufactures is perfect..Redoubt, at least in their recent isued ranges (Boer Wars and Boxer Rebellion) have abbandoned their sculpting dolls similar to giants and begun to standardise their sculpts with the majority of 28mm production (OG, WF, Empress)…Finally i can also suggest to trow in the lot some 28mm Newline Colonials..less "Regular appearance" of the Redoubt type and more similar to the iconic Boer farmer (beards ecc…)to which we are accustomed to think

A big thanks to all of you. I will get some Boers on Sat at Salute. Pleased to hear the Rebout figs are not to big, they look very nice.

Go 10mm use Pendraken miniature, great range.
Beats me why people do 28mm, each to their own I suppose.

Hi Robert666 I know 10mm would be good for large battles but I like the idea of doing skirmish games, attacks on Blockhouses, small ambushes and attacks on Boer occupied farmhouses etc.

And for inspiration, you can't beat 'Breaker Morant'. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Yes It's one very good film. There are a couple of clips for other Boer war films on YouTube but I do not think they are available in English.

Nasty war, never had the inclination to do it. Have plenty of 15mm boers, but use them in Zulu War gaming.

Just too nasty a conflict for me. :( No "Bad Guys", per se. I like games that have good guys and bad guys. (which is why I don't do much Zulu War gaming anymore, don't like killing Zulus, and hate losing on the Zulu side :))

Don't mind playing the side of the bad guys, I'll play Dervish or Pathan.

Knight of St John11 Apr 2014 9:27 p.m. PST

No offence to the Boers but I had a great, great grandfather in the British army so for me the British Empire are the good guys.

I game the 2nd Boer War in 25mm and I agree, skirmish is the way to go. You don't even need Boer figures for the big, early battles where the Boers were well entrenched.
There's an excellent skirmish scenario in Edwin Herbert's Wargaming in History The Second Anglo-Boer War based on Duivelskloof, the action in Breaker Morant where Capt. Hunt lost his life. You only need six Boers and ten Imperial mounted infantry.

I have 28mm Black Tree Design and 28mm Old Glory Boers. I've missed the dismounted figures together. The 28mm Black Tree Design Boer cavalry I kept separated in their own 12 man unit. I use my Boers for either first or second Boer War.

I'm new here, but I have heard comments like those before and can never really understand why one would say the Boer War was a 'nasty war' – all wars are nasty: I certainly can't think of one which was 'nice' or 'fun'.

And not sure why one would claim there were only bad guys fighting it? I am also intrigued why Zulus are good guys, and Dervishes are bad guys! I think you need to speak to a few of their neighbouring tribes to learn a little more about the Zulus.

Each to their own, but I think the Boer War is far more interesting to game than any other colonial war.

Yes the hunter becomes the hunted.

Old Glory mixes well with Foundry in this range. I have many British Battalions and Boer Commandos mixed with those two ranges.

Redoubt is much too big to mix in the same unit but work well in their own battalions or commandos, can all be in the same battle.

Hinchliffe figs are too tall and skinny to mix.

Ral Partha is just the opposite. RP are true 25's and are too small to be mixed. I have pictures posted on the Colonial Yahoo Group and the Camino Real Historical Gamers yahoo group.
