All,
Thinking about re-visiting 28mm Darkest Africa gaming. Can anyone offer a size comparison between the above three figure ranges? I would expect Copplestone and Foundry to be a good match, but I'm not sure about Northstar.

Nick,

I have Copplestone, Foundry, and some Old Glory in my Darkest Africa forces. All seem to look good together onec on the table. I do not have any Northstar so I can't compare them.

I'm not sure about the compatibility of the ranges of figures you've mentioned. But, while having just such a discussion one day at the games store I frequent. I walked over to a very tall friend and stood next to him. I asked my other friend if we two were in the same scale. Just sayin'…

Most of my Darkest Africa are Foundry, with a smattering of Copplestone and Ral Partha. The Partha are, as to be expected, quite small. On the other hand, the Copplestone sailors are giants among men compared to the Foundry. I wouldn't mix any of them in the same unit.

What about throwing the Wargames Factory Zulus or Perry Ansar into the mix? I expect then that I would stick with Foundry for most of the collection.

I would not mix in same unit, but in a game as different units no problem. I'll have Foundry,Perry,Askari,Castaway,Northstar,Minifigs and Copplestone all in a game at same time and nobody notices or cares,it's the fun of the game.

I'm currently putting together a Pulp era Egyptian archeological dig. It includes figures from Foundry, Copplestone Castings, Eureka, Reaper and North Star's The Servants of Ra from their In Her Majesty's Name figure line. They all look fine together. When I did my Victorian Gallery, I used North Star's Scotland Yard figures with Foundry, Eureka and Blue Moon with no problem. I can't remember which pics include which manufacturer's figures, but you can look at my Victorian Gallery to see if my general standards are up to yours and thus my comments worth listening to. Good luck with your project. My Victorian Gallery can be seen at link

War in 15mm,
Beautiful stuff, very evocative of the era. Not really helpful to me though, as thee are no comparison photos per se.

I have Foundry and Copplestone and a few Pulp. Copplestone are on the whole taller, however even amongst the Foundry figures there is a variation in size! Pulp fits in even if they look a little "cartoonier" in style.

Variations in height, bulk and so forth are an advantage in native war bands. You get more pose variety that way. My Hadendowahs and Pathans are all over the place from 25mm into 30mm. This also includes less well-sculpted stuff to the exquisite. The mass effect is appealing for me and not regimental in appearance.
Good Luck in your project,
Bill P.

How do Askari compare with Foundry?

Coopelstone and Foundry work well together and North Star and Artizan look good. You can usually see from the figures that a lot of the same dollies were used in sculpting the figures, sharing poses…

Note though that that native archer is a pygmy.

Copplestone sculpted most of the Foundry DA range. His own Return to DA figures are noticeably taller, but for the most part they're compatible with his Foundry sculpts. I happily mixed Foundry and Copplestone Azande, for instance; it just adds a little realistic height variation. The Germans and British sailors do tower over Foundry DA imperialists, though.

after years of steryl planning an considerations on this matter…for colonial figures..i reached the conclusion about those 3 categories of castings:
- Small: like Ral Partha, Frontier, Minifigs
- Big: Redoubt (excluding last Boer War and China Range)
- OK: all the rest including Askari, OG, WF, North Star, Artizan, Unfeasably/Hat, Irregular, Essex, Reviresco, Newline, Perry, Empress, Bicorne, Warlord ecc..
Ok if you stick to one of those 3 groups without mixing between others…once painted and cleverly based the difference in height ecc..disappear
