I have a boxload of Tamiya 1/35 MM's from 40 years ago, both badly painted and glued. Tried just about everything over the years to dissolve the glue bond (including some stuff that claimed it was able to, but it only damaged the test minis, without affecting the glue.) Picked up a small bottle of Goo Gone at the Dollar Tree for removing some labels, and on a whim dropped another test figure into a film canister with a little bit of GG to experiment.

Dang if it didn't work. (Tried a few more figures to make sure it wasn't a fluke.)

Not only did it make the glue release it's hold (pieces came apart with little effort and it was easy to trim off what was left), it also softened up the old Testor's enamel enough to easily strip it off (a bonus!)

Only did an overnight soak, so don't know what it would do to plastic long term (one gun did break apart, but it might have been damaged in earlier attempts.) And the glue was that Testor's tube stuff that's been around forever. Probably won't work with the new stuff that welds the plastic together.

The Goo Gone reeks of orange, so I let the pieces air out for a while and gave them a good washing in strong detergent water to remove any remaining oils.

I'm definitely adding this to my paint stripping arsenal…. thumbs up

Okay, after some further experimentation on some more (sacrificial) figures, here is a Good News/Bad News update:

Bad News, After a several day soak, Goo Gone will cause the plastic to become brittle (especially thin sections) and break easily. Also, glue joins that weren't thick or full of loose spaces (like from bubbles) to allow the GG to seep in aren't going to budge.

The Good News, A short soak (3 to 6 hours) will still loosen up enamel paint enough to clean off (especially that old Testors gloss.) Best to limit soak time to as little as needed in any event (for plastic, at least. Metal should be fine.)

Sorry about getting any hopes up. Thought it best to share what went wrong before somebody else made the same mistake….
