As a David (never a Dave), I prefer to call those people "idiots I don't game with." |

Or, as The Kinks put it: "Thank you for the Daves, Those endless Daves, those sacred Daves you gave me. I'm thinking of the Daves, I won't forget a single Dave, believe me." |

Only -1 for being behind a wall ? I wouldn't go as far as invulnerable
but
. Trying to recall which battle the cavalry got trapped behind high hedges and were destroyed by well placed dragoons. |
Sarpedon | 08 Apr 2014 6:59 a.m. PST |
Well
it was a low farm wall, with meleeing across the top of it :O) Anyhow, a discussion about suitable combat factors would have been fine, but it wasn't really like that! What I couldn't get my head around was the idea that they'd squat down and *therefore* be invulnerable: "Altogether now lads, SQUAT!" |

Oh yes, agree on that – very silly, and anyway the cavalry would have a brace of pistols so the melee isn't really just a melee is it ? |

A wonderful read. I think every wargamer has met at least one "Dave". Thanks for sharing! |

What I couldn't get my head around was the idea that they'd squat down and *therefore* be invulnerable: "Altogether now lads, SQUAT!" It's the reason why the Royalists lost the ECW. They didn't squat in time! EVERYONE knows that! That was a nice little anecdote Jay. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I think your opponent represents the fringe of our hobby. Most folks I've met, at least here in the States, are very good sports. |

Thanks chaps :O) I agree most wargamers are good sports, on the whole. But we also tend to be a competitive lot – it goes with the territory really. One of the pleasures of solo gaming is that you don't have to worry about that sort of thing – provided you're okay about losing to yourself ;o) "Dave" was a bit of a special case, I must admit. But he's not the only one I've ever met – just one of the worst!!! |

But we also tend to be a competitive lot – it goes with the territory really. I'd agree to a point. When a prize is involved or a tournament to see who is "the best", that is usually the case. It can bring out the extreme competitive spirit in us. In some few, it can truly bring out the worst. I tend to care little and relegate myself to pickup games where I usually find like-minded individuals. We happy few just want a good battle. |

Good read. Funny and, in some cases, all too true. |

I'm probably jinxing myself
But I don't think I've ever played with, or even met, Dave. Funny read. Thanks. |

It's the reason why the Royalists lost the ECW. They didn't squat in time! EVERYONE knows that! evil grin I would have thought given the hygiene standards of the day they would spend a lot of time squatting. |
