A new figure coming soon for Steve Barber's samurai range:

This is a great looking range that tempts me into taking the plunge several times a year. The larger size is perfect for samurai, I think, as it would allow some fun brushwork, particularly with the armour.

Your work with them over the years has really been inspirational, Cartoonist. Your blog is fascninating. I only wish Barber would release more Ikko Ikki types!

I've commissioned these last few new samurai, and I'm starting to run out of ideas, but more Ikko-Ikki sounds good :)

Personally I have always wanted a pair of models representing Uesugi Kenshin and and Takeda Shingen with Shingen Blocking the sword strike using a War fan.

Yes, I've noticed you have commissioned several. It must have cost you a pretty penny, but I salute your dedication to the range. Other customers owe you!

Carlos, I agree that the two warlords would make great additions. The only little niggle I have--and it is a small one--is that personality figures only go so far in completing a range; one buys one of each and is done. Ikko Ikki, Samurai, Ashigaru, on the other hand, supply the scruffy masses one needs to fill a scenario. At least that's my opinion, but then I'm pretty biased here!

Yeah that makes sense Daryl maybe it would be worth them charging a little extra for the models that people purchase less off. Though I imagine that people don't buy mass amount of models at higher scales. I know I would be willing to pay a little extra to get a quality Uesugi Kenshin in 28mm to lead my army. I have the perry one and its decent but doesn't grab me.

To me if I was buying 42,, models it would be to make a display or Diorama rather than as wargaming pieces.

Daryl, Steve actually has some pretty decent rates compared to the rest of the industry. And he usually completes my commissions in a matter of a weeks (not months.)

For the price, I get to choose exactly what I want sculpted; the past three or four figures, I chose the pose, clothing, weapons, facial expressions, among numerous other tiny details Steve asked about. I certainly got a lot for my pretty penny. And they are my favorite figures, so it was worth it :)

That's really impressive service and I could be very tempted to use him also. Must be strong…I need another period like a hole in the head.

Carlos, I have to laugh. Normally I game with 54mm figures, so 42's actually seem like little guys to me! I agree that these would make a great diorama though.

Intresting. Mostly skirmish games I imagine? I am going as small as 6mm for my Samurai atm.

I imagine that they are easier to paint in some ways but harder in others due to needing to paint more detail.

I need someone with a shrink ray to get those down to 28mm (and ideally down to 15mm!)!!!

Though I suppose I could do a little conversion to make them into various ayakashi for service in 28mm as they sit.

Perhaps some of the more "standard" look Sohei, they'd work both for the normal scale and would be large enough for smaller scales to have them as something like the Benkei statue…

evilcartoonist07 Apr 2014 12:44 p.m. PST

Lion, usually, it's reverse with me:
"I wish I could get that samurai in 42mm."
And there's a LOT in 28 and 15 I would like to have in 42.

Since I'm only doing skirmish, it makes it not as expensive to commission some of those smaller-scale inspirations into larger figures for my own collection. Ask Steve about his rates. I think he'll sculpt most scales (and genres.)

Borathan, I've also considered having Steve do some standard sohei. And I think he's mentioned he'd like to sculpt sohei (and ikko-ikki.) I'll keep this in mind for the next commission :)
