Just looking for choices for modern rules where 1 tank = 1 tank and 1 inf stand = squad

Thanks folks

I play Cold War Commander using 1 tank = 1 tank and a base of four figures as a squad. It works well, easy to learn and gives an excellent game.

One to one vehicles and US one stand is a fireteam, and for USSR one stand is a squad( I am going to use 2 stands for USSR squads myself).

From their Kickstarter last year, has run through of the turn sequence on the video. It starts at 2:30 in.

Mein Panzer is 1 tank=1 mini, I think it's squads for infantry stands (may be 1/2 squad but not sure).

I'm checking out "Threat" that are free from freewargamesrules.com. The authors say it is for 1/285th scale if that is what scale you are planning to use. Dice used are percentage dice…

Tank vs tank is best at 1:144 is my opinion. To do Tanks best they need to have terrain suited to them which is typically in the 500 to 1500yd battle range. 1:144 because its east to turn the turrets at that scale but are small enough to not look out of place at a ground scale of 1mm=1m. In Maneouver Group (brit spelling) troops are on fireteam or squad bases. Don't get too big an urban area or it bogs down into a grunt fight like the real thing.

MG will happily do tanks at 1:72 20mm is scales but there they are not the key weapon.

In the end its the figure scale you want on the table size you want but all choces are compromises.

As always get the free stuff to get a flavor.

The buildings are not mandatory just space saving. We have done 1/300 scale but too me (getting on a bit) they are a bit too small.

Ps. no points system as there are no terrain "rules". you use google to get an idea of where you are fighting and write ascenario and play the "Story".

What happened to that old set of rules "Challenger" that I used to play in college?

WRG modern rules are not bad, the gun v's armour tables are meant to be accurate, especially for the Cold-War period, though some people balk at the nationalistic bias in abilities of different nations and the concept of exigency moves. The old set is free to download and provided many a happy hour of Cold war gaming at 6mm.

I liked Challenger, but like any 80's rule system it had numerous modifiers, some highly cumbersome systems (the ARGW resolution needing up to 5 rolls per vehicle) and a triumph of patriotism over fact in some of the data (the AH-64's armour rating being the equivalent of a T-34 85 and virtually invulnerable to the ZSU's). It did though make infantry conflict a far less fiddly process, with squads not 4 man elements, as in WRG, but seriously underestimated the effect of MG's.

Though I haven't updated it since GW1.

Still enjoying WRG's rules that I was using in the 1980s

I gamed with a group in the 1980's that used the "Threat" rules. We fought some really big battles with it, the largest being a Soviet Divisional attack against a West German force. We used 1/285.

The Reading Area Wargamers "RAW" (Reading, PA, USA) often run games at the HMGS-East conventions using their own rules mashup called "Challenger XXI". My buddies and I like the rules so well that we try to get into a game of it at every con. Our point of reference is Battalions in Crisis(Tractics improved) and MBT. Might be worth contacting them for playtesting.

I'm working on using the Strike Legion sci-fi rules (the original, company-per-side set), converted to moderns. It's taken a few years of off-and-on dabbling, but I got the house rules for the period sorted out and I'm happy with them.

I spent a month or so last fall rating weapons; lost some steam again while rating the multitudinous versions of T-series tanks, but I hope to get back to it later this spring.
