The Whitehall Warlords held their first meeting in the Spanish Lounge in the Civil Service Recreation Centre in December 1974. To mark its fortieth anniversary the club is returning to Salute and would like to invite any former members to drop by our table and share their reminiscences of years gone by and bring us up to date with what they are doing now. We are on table GK07 and are once again in Vietnam with our game "Iron Butterflies in the Killer Jungle".

If you were once a Whitehall Warlord but you will not be able to make it to Salute we would still be delighted to hear from you if you PM me through TMP.

Is club still going for whitehall based CS personnel?

Evzone05 Apr 2014 11:26 a.m. PST

I vaguely remember the club being based at the Civil Service Club near Charing Cross back in the mid eighties?……or is my memory deceiving me…?

Andrew,

I would like to ask the same question as Jimlad48.

Thanks,

Ezza

The club started in the decommissioned nuclear bunker under the DoE at Marsham Street, close to Westminster. When that closed we decamped to the new centre off Chadwick Street, behind the Channel 4 headquarters. We had a brief and unsatisfactory stay in a school off Victoria Street before embarking on our present arrangements.

The club is still going and although its membership is not restricted to civil servants the majority of members are serving or retired civil servants or local government officers.

The club now meets fortnightly on a Wednesday in the St Chrtistopher Inn on Borough High Street to game, and on alternate Wednesdays we meet up in the Speaker near Westminster to discuss wargames, trade news and generally set the world to rights. Recent games have included Musket and Tomahawk, Saga, Wings and Sails of Glory, and Force on Force, mainly set in Iraq but also in Vietnam in preparation for the game at Salute.

Andrew

Is there a club website or forum to browse? As a Whitehall based CS, I would love to try and get over to see you for a game of M&T or SAGA, but would be helpful to get some kind of information about what you do, and how one arranges a game and at what times – having been a CS for over 10 years, I have never heard of this club, which is a crying shame!

Jimlad48,

I am Whitehall based too and had heard mention of the club, but never could find any website or forum. I see from Andrew's post that whilst they have retained the club name they are now in Borough rather than Whitehall.

Are you looking to game in and around the Whitehall area, as there is the Exiles club which meets near to Waterloo.

Ezza,

I know of the Exiles but have never been down there. I tend to go to Clapham or Darksphere. I am happy to try exiles out when I can though.

The Wednesday nature of the Warriors is perfect for me as its my clearest day usually for gaming. I must admit to being surprised at the lack of internet presence – had I known they existed then I;d have joibed years ago! How can any club survive in the internet age without some kind of web presence?

ezza12307 Apr 2014 6:36 a.m. PST

Jimlad48,

The Exiles are on Thursdays and not too far from the Darksphere shop. So maybe not ideal for your Wednesday slot, but may be worth checking out. I have been an infrequent member of the Exiles recently, due to other commitments, but hope to re-start regular visits soon.

I remember attending a few meetings of the WW in the old CSSC premises back in the late 1970's, the place always made me think it should be a Doctor Who setting.

My department was based in the City and it wasn't always convenient to travel across to Westminster so I gradually drifted away.

Good to know you're still going.

I used to attend regularly in the 90s, before the old DETR 2 Marsham Street was knocked down.

I did RPGs and board gaming rather than wargaming thro. It was a blessing to leave out the board week after week. And watch the huge 7 years wars game in the room next door.

I also help out on the exhibition games – particularly a great Judge Dredd game for SELWG in Lewisham sports centre.

Andy – is there a Google group or Facebook page for the group?

Jimlad4813 Apr 2014 8:37 a.m. PST

I had a chat with them yesterday – very nice guys, but sadly not website or Facebook page.

Its a shame as there are a lot of CS wargamers out there, but no means of the group really advertising their existence on the web.

Hopefully I'll be able to see them in a few weeks time at the pub!
