"China should not doubt the U.S. commitment to defend its Asian allies and the prospect of economic retaliation should also discourage Beijing from using force to pursue territorial claims in Asia in the way Russia has in Crimea, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday.

Daniel Russel, President Barack Obama's diplomatic point man for East Asia, said it was difficult to determine what China's intentions might be, but Russia's annexation of Crimea had heightened concerns among U.S. allies in the region about the possibility of China using force to pursue its claims.

"The net effect is to put more pressure on China to demonstrate that it remains committed to the peaceful resolution of the problems," Russel, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asia, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee…"

Yeah, we might pepper them with colorful language and not let them make our t-shirts until we realize that putting sanctions on them hurts us about as much as it hurts them. We are MUCH more tied to China economically than we are Russia.

Not that I am expecting China to start annexing anything anyway, not yet at any rate.

Have Paper Tigers been replaced by E-Tigers? If not we should start using it here and be trend setters.

We "might" (yes, we really might – we mean it this time) also resort to posting another unrecognizable person taking a "selfie" with a hastily scrawled sign mentioning support for Japan over the issue.

That should really frighten them, since we'll have gained the advantage on the all-important social media stage of world opinion.

Be afraid China, very afraid.

Of course, that presumes that we can come together as a nation to make a decision on such an important "strategic" option, anytime soon.

You know this really is at the heart of many armed conflicts.

1. "Don't cross that line"
2. Agressor crosses that line.
3. "Don't cross this line. This time I really mean it".
4. Agressor crosses this line.
5. "Oh yeah? I bet you won't cross this line".
6. Agressor crosses that line as well.
7. Both sides come to blows as THAT time the Defender was serious.

Overly clever politicians are our worst enemies. If we aren't going to fight over Ukraine lets just say so upfront. (not saying we should fight for Ukraine. Would hate to have Russians get involved in Mexican cartel violence).

Just sayin'

Not that China will take any of the disputed islands, but the situation is not the same as Crimea. Crimea was a sovereign territory of the Ukraine. These islands are not a part of any country.

We shall taunt them mercilously on Twitter, and unfriend them on Facebook, if they take any overt actions.

Picketing with signs outside the Chinese consulate. Then, to turn up the heat, protesters wear T-shirts with anti-Chicom slogans. The Chicoms will then be quaking in their little Mao suits and won't try anything…

ha! Assuming the Chinese really want these barren rocks that bad, it's hard to believe the US would or could do much to stop them, given all the US debt held by Chinese financiers. If they called it all in, or shifted their holdings to another currency, the US would be in a depression so fast you wouldn't even be able to sneeze without losing your life's savings.

Cardinal Ximenez06 Apr 2014 6:48 a.m. PST

The Chinese receive approximately $74 USD million per day in interest payments on US debt. I don't think they'll call it anytime soon.

Perhaps we've both got each others' noses, then!

Cardinal Ximenez16 Apr 2014 9:41 a.m. PST

Agreed. Borrow too much shame on us. Lend too much shame on them.
