Would 1/72 scale stowage (bags, crates, oil drums) work with 15mm, 1/100 scale vehicle models? Or, would they look too big on them?

khurasanminiatures02 Apr 2014 12:33 p.m. PST

I think it really depends on what the stuff is. A small bedroll or crate in 1/72 would be ok I reckon. I don't like the way 55-gallon drums look in different scales because they have a distinctive size, but other people disagree and happily use them in multiple scales.

By the way we have lots of stowage made in 1/100 scale.

(Terrible pictures those -- really have to get them repainted and re-shot)

And other clutter that can be used for stowage as well…

I picked up a couple of sets of pre-painted 1/72 stowage when Modelzone shut down. Various bedrolls, packs, crates, bags, ammo boxes, jerry cans and drums. The drums do look a little oversized compared to their 15mm counterparts from The Scene, but everything else is fine. I already had a lot of 1/72 stuff from an Italeri or Esci command post set.

Old Glory has stowage gear, under the Command Decision stuff, in the 15mm range

You'll find a vast number of examples here link but here are some one's I've picked out to make my point:

I think they are good enough but they don't, perhaps, always look very 'SF'.

I guess that's important if you think everthing in the 'future' will look very high tech. I happen to think those high tech crates – above on Khurasan's post – look fantastic but I'd not want to have to paint many of them!

John T – those are exactly the ones I got, £1.00 GBP a set in the Modelzone clearance (and I have them on my CMG tanks and APC's too).

Rocco has 1/87 accessories that would look great on 15mm vehicles. One set has shovels, saws, comm wire wheels, racks and even vehicular radios and more.

War Monkey02 Apr 2014 6:36 p.m. PST

Yes Rocco 1/87 stuff works really well

BlackWidowPilot Fezian02 Apr 2014 8:38 p.m. PST

I've used Rocco, 1/72 scale, 1/76 scale, Khurasan, Reviresco, model railroading accessories, and whatever the Hell else I can get my claws on, mixed and matched like primordial soup and depending upon the individual items and how you use them, the results come out quite well.

Ya just gotta use yer eye… Both of 'em if necessary!evil grin

You're a lucky man! Mine must have cost me five times that on ebay and other similar avenues.

A pound each? I'd have bought every single one they had….

Im pretty sure that the set below is what TK 421 referring to, personally i think that as JT is so handy with the green stuff maybe he could make some tarps and various bedrolls and then nicely ask Ainsty if they might be interested in casting and selling them.

That's the one. It's been around for ever. Sculpting rolled tarps and the like is not difficult at all. You can even cut srips of Kleenex facial tissue, soak them in 50/50 Elmer's and water, roll them up and paint when dry. If you've never done that before, you'll be amazed with the results. I've even used that method draping it over a brass wire tent frame for an unbeatable and realistic canvas effect.

You may be pleased to know that I sent a file to Ainsty for more etched brass stowage baskets and bustles for tanks (not just Slammers ones though – of course – that was primary in my mind).

On that basis, yes: we really do need to get some lumps of pre-made stowage to drop into them. When they appear I'll see what can be done.

I'm old enough to remember reading about that very technique in Shepard Paine's classic work Modeling Tanks and Armored Fighting Vehicles for mainly 1/35 scale subjects. No school like the Old School.evil grin

Tinfoil on champage bottles also works (and gives excuse to drink the now open bottle).

Bear in mind that 1:100 is a bit big for "15mm". At 1:100 a 15mm man would only be 1.5 meters tall.

So stuff for 1:87 or even 1:76 is no more out of proportion than having a "15mm" man stand next to a 1:100 vehicle.

You know it BlackWidowPilot! I'm from the same school and adopted the technique from Master Paine back in 1972!

Old School! Old School! Old School! :D

TK 42104 Apr 2014 4:09 a.m. PST

That's right War Monkey! Back then the only store bought accessories were the ones that came with the kit. Sheppard Paine was making everything from scratch and showing everyone how to do it.

Avamango, what's that Roco part number, and where can it be ordered from?
