Jeffrey, Yes. The error stems from Viskovatov, who interpreted a proposal for an implemented order. The order was formally implemented as a "law" or "regulation" in 1817. Having said that, the Klein watercolors drawn from life begin to show the blue with white in sketches done in late 1814 and 1815 (after the peace). But these were not colored until later. So, maybe the new colors were implemented a bit before 1817, or maybe Klein just used what he was seeing at the time he colored his drawings. In any case, the red with yellow is correct for 1812, 1813 and most likely 1814 until the peace. A modern Russian researcher figured this out just a few years ago when researching in the archives for his book on Russian marine infantry. The marines were being ordered to "dress like army" and among the details were the pompom colors, including the red with yellow. At first the researcher thought the marines just got it wrong, but when checking more carefully the army's orders, he discovered Viskovatov's mistake. Interesting, no ? - Sasha |
