I'm planning to build a communal italian army for a FoG campaign. The time slot is still fairly wide.

So far I am looking at Legio Heroica, Essex and Mirliton (in that order). The major downside for LH being that they don't have a carroccio model. How well do the figures mix and how well does LH fit for italy? Might be better of using Essex miniatures entirely?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Mine are a wide mix, but centred on Mirliton, Essex and Gladiator (Feudal range) … they all mix well. No Legio Heroica, so can't comment on how well they mix with the others …

Re suitability, Mirliton's are specifically for Medieval Italians, of course …

I would add to that Donnington who have some fine standard medieval spearmen and crossbowmen.

Legio Heroica are great figures and work well for the time period. I mix them with Essex, Feudal Castings, and others without trouble. I have the Essex carroccio and it works with my other figures fine.

What were the figures in the Armati game at the SoA BattleDay, Lewisgunner?

Mirliton figures are expressely made to depict italian Communal armies.
The infantry has a large percentage of leather armour and cloth.
The cavalry is italian style equipped.
AFAIK Essex are more "generic" and need good research to pick what is correct from what is not.
My two cents.

I think Essex's figures they sell for this period are some of their weaker ones, though I have used a few.

As has been said, Mirliton are designed specifically for (mid to late) 13th century.
I think they mix well with Donnington New Era, Alain Touller, Outpost, Black Hat infantry (ex-Gladiator) and Old Glory 15s. Lancashire infantry will mix but I haven't tried the cavalry. Some Museum figures will mix.
LH are a bit bigger than the others but nice figures.

Links and some comparisons on my blog which is mostly about 13th century using 15mm figures. link

Carroccios I know of – Mirliton, Minifigs, Essex, Black Hat, Falcon (though not seen that one). I have a couple of Mirliton models done – nice, but the tall masts are a pain. They are very easy to knock as you reach over the table. I have a Minifigs one to do which I don't really need but will likely paint anyway.

Thanks a lot for the answers so far. I didn't know about Donnington. Their camp figures look very nice. Should I be ok with legio heroica for all of the troops and donnington followers plus Essex carroccio for the camp?

You could. The Donnington camp figures are a bit smaller but they won't be side to side with the others.

You could use the Essex carroccio but accompany it with LH figures such as the pilgrims.

I have a wonderful Mirliton carroccio. But I have chenged it from florentine to sienese.
Siena is my town and we obviously LOVE the battle of Monteaperti :-))
